Treble hooks feature three bends and points in one hook. Trebles provide greater coverage for artificial baits such as crankbaits, jerkbaits or topwaters. Bait anglers also use trebles. Cut bait for catfish or threading minnows for trolling salmon or trout are examples where trebles are regularly used.

To tie your fishing hook onto your fishing line, thread the line through your hook, then loop the line back towards you and wrap it around itself 5 times. Complete the knot by feeding the end of the line back through the loop you made and pulling it tight. Before you can cast your line, bait your hook by running the tip of the hook through the bait at least 3 times so that it’s secure. When you’re ready to cast your line, hold the rod out to your side, then sweep it forward like you’re skipping a stone as you release the line. A lighter line will normally increase the action of lures that dance, buzz, or hum. One way to up your chances of a catch is to keep two rods with you, each with a different size line. If one lure isn’t working on a particular line, just pop it on the next one and give it a shot. The difference in line diameter may be invisible to you, but the number of fish you nab will surely open your eyes.

Quick History: This topwater bait was developed in 1939 (although it has a wooden forefather called the Zarragossa). Its side-to-side action inspired the phrase “walk the dog,” which is how most describe the technique of twitching it across the water. Thousands of lures are now built to imitate this action.

Ugh…The cars are numbered 1 through 4 for each picture. When holding your cards it is so hard to see the picture making it difficult to play comfortable. Very few pictures and they were not very fun. My grandson and I did not like it. We played with other people and they were confused if we look at the pictures or the numbers which did not make sense.

The eye of a hook, although some hooks are technically eyeless, is the point where the hook is connected to the line. Hook eye design is usually optimized for either strength, weight and/or presentation. There are different types of eyes to the hooks. Typical eye types include the ring or ball eye, a brazed eye-the eye is fully closed, a tapered eye to reduce weight, a looped eye—traditional on Atlantic Salmon flies, needle eyes, and spade end—no eye at all, but a flattened area to allow secure snelling of the leader to the hook. Hook eyes can also be positioned one of three ways on the shank—up turned, down turned or straight.

For beginners, using a larger bobber that you can see from the bank makes catching fish much easier. With a bobber, the angler will be able to see a strike from a fish when the bobber starts to jerk and disappear below the surface of the water. Put on just enough shot (sinkers), however, to compensate for the larger bobber to prevent being too hard to see the action of the biting fish.

Construction: The fact that this lure is made of balsa offers two distinct advantages to anglers. First, the inconsistency of wood allows for a lure that will be erratic, which is a good thing. Second, it lets anglers work the bait both on the surface (since it is very buoyant) and beneath.

Great article. One of the simplest lures amongst several hundred in 4 very large tackle boxes. I’ve even caught rainbow trout on Blue Ridge parkway to snook off the beaches of Gulf Shores with these jigs. I like your site.

Despite their non-slip fish control capability, these Rapala gloves cannot be used for filleting the catch. They can only be used to hold the fish to keep it from slipping out of your grasp on the way to the cooler.

Another thing to consider when it comes to durability is the type of water that you typically fish within. If you fish within freshwater or saltwater, it will have an effect upon your gloves, and how long they last. If you have some gloves which are made out of a thinner, absorbent material, then having those kinds of gloves around saltwater will not work, as the salt water will eat those gloves up.

The body of water you typically fish within is a key factor for which kind of fishing gloves you will need. Not all gloves can be used in saltwater, although all the different fishing gloves can be used in freshwater. The reason that not all gloves can be used in saltwater is because the actual salt within the saltwater will start eating away at material within your gloves, which will cause them to fall apart over time. There are gloves which are specified for saltwater, so you will need to focus on those if you mainly fish within saltwater bodies of water. Once you have determined the body of water you typically fish upon, then you can move onto the next step.

While wiring a massive fish is likely the most intense test you’ll ever put your hands through when fishing, it’s not the only one. Fighting a big fish with rod and reel can be similarly hard on an angler, especially in an unforgiving offshore environment.

We’re loving playing Go Fish with our 6 year old with this deck of cards. They are sturdy enough to last a long time and the pictures are clear enough to easily verbalize (do you have an orange fish? a green eel?). The case is sturdy as well, so we are easily able to keep track of the cards.

Supports Wildlife and Fisheries Management: Angling is an important wildlife management tool. For more than 100 years anglers have helped to contribute to wildlife and fisheries management efforts by helping to set seasons and creel limits. Wildlife populations of most fish species remain stable and in some cases flourish, a far cry from a decade ago when many species suffered from over harvest and the ill effects of pollution. Anglers also have a vested interest in and support many efforts to preserve and protect all species and the environment-all the while helping to increase biodiversity.

Choose a lure based on its size action to up your chances of success. These factors correspond to the fish and not to the surrounding conditions. While water conditions are important, you should always consider the fish first and the variable conditions second.

Take largemouth bass, for example. In his book Knowing Bass, Dr. Keith Jones, who has studied bass senses for decades, notes, “Their color vision is strongest in the areas of medium-red to green. It fails rapidly moving into the blues and purples, as it does toward the far reds. These color extremes are seen as lighter or darker shades of gray or black. Very pale colors of any shade are likely seen as simply light-colored, whereas dark reds, greens, blues and purples are interpreted as simply dark.”

Make sure to follow local regulations on the number of fish you may retain. Although you may catch 100 fish using good bait, you might only be allowed to keep a small number of fish or a certain size fish. Some areas are catch and release only, so be cognizant of fishing regulations.

Try a crankbait lure. One of the most recognisable of fishing lures, a crankbait is usually made of plastic or wood and used primarily to fish for bass. This lure often features a bill on the front that looks a lot like a duck. Generally, the bill on the crankbait lure allows it to die to a pre-defined depth, allowing anglers to work a particular column within the water. Many crankbaits come with additional features such as trailing hooks and rattlers.

At the end of the day, finding fishing gloves which offer you the right amount of protection, performance and comfort is what will comprise the ideal glove for you. This may be vastly different than your fishing buddies, and this is perfectly fine. What matters is that you have a fishing glove which helps you catch the most fish as possible, while ensuring you return back home in the same physical condition as when you left for your fishing trip. Have fun on your next fishing expedition with the best possible fishing gloves for your needs!

Consider first that your hands will likely become wet with sweat or seawater, which causes slippage, pruning and a greater susceptibility to cuts. Then there’s the fact that a rocking boat often leads to banged knuckles on heavy gear. And, of course, if you’re latched onto a true beast, you’ll be working hard for an extended period of time, which always leads to hand cramps and blistering.

Don’t keep casting in the same area. When you’re lure fishing, it’s very important to move around and avoid playing out a particular area. Fish aren’t as stupid as you think, and they’ll start recognizing the lure eventually, making it less effective. If you get a lure spit back, it’s time to move elsewhere.
