There are a large number of different types of fish hooks. At the macro level, there are bait hooks, fly hooks and lure hooks. Within these broad categories there are wide varieties of hook types designed for different applications. Hook types differ in shape, materials, points and barbs, and eye type and ultimately in their intended application. When individual hook types are designed the specific characteristics of each of these hook components are optimized relative to the hook’s intended purpose. For example, a delicate dry fly hook is made of thin wire with a tapered eye because weight is the overriding factor. Whereas Carlisle or Aberdeen light wire bait hooks make use of thin wire to reduce injury to live bait but the eyes are not tapered because weight is not an issue. Many factors contribute to hook design, including corrosion resistance, weight, strength, hooking efficiency, and whether the hook is being used for specific types of bait, on different types of lures or for different styles of flies. For each hook type, there are ranges of acceptable sizes. For all types of hooks, sizes range from 32 (the smallest) to 20/0 (the largest).
“In addition, since your range is reduced, you learn to slow your approach. You spend more time at each lay-down tree, and fish structure from all angles and with multiple lures. I think you become a smarter and more thorough angler, not catching only fish that are willing to pounce on the first lure through their territory. Finally, your reward is heightened in a kayak. This year I landed a 44-pound striper from my Big Tuna. While it would have been exciting in a boat, the feeling was indescribable in the kayak. I still have a small aluminum boat that I use occasionally for longer distance outings but every time I use it, I find myself wishing I was in my kayak.”
Movement – Detecting movement is one of the primary ways a fish hunts for its dinner. This is why lure fishing is so effective. In many instances, a fish recognizes its food simply by the way it moves. If you learn to make your lure dance just right, it will become irresistible to fish.
According to Johnston, there are three common mistakes people make when purchasing a kayak. The first is buying a $300 kayak from a big box store because it’s on sale. Kayaks are like most other things in life—you get what you pay for. Cheap kayaks are typically less durable, less stable, and less comfortable than quality brands.
Quick History: Although there are a ton of swimbaits out there to choose from, this is the original, and it comes in sizes that will catch fish from dink bream to magnum marlin. There’s no telling how many species of fish have fallen for this boot-tailed softbait since its introduction in the 1980s.
The best type of material for a fishing glove is a Superfabric material, which interwoven material to ensure that it is up to 800% more resistant to punctures than your normal, run of the mill fishing gloves. Not only is the material stronger, but most gloves for fishing that have this material have it doubled up, meaning that there isn’t just one layer of protection, but two. That means a glove which is made out of this material can not only protect you from the normal things on a fish, but can also help protect you from an accidental slice of a knife, or a hook, or anything else which could slice you, the money is well worth it.
Make sure not to completely cover your hook or hooks with bait. The point of the hook should stick out otherwise you will simply take the hook of the fishes mouth. Using maggots it is best to just hook a small piece of skin and leave the small hook open as much as possible. Worms should be put on a slightly bigger hook. Fasten the worms by taking some skin on the hook and repeat that a few times. Also try breads and some kinds of cheeses.
I would also recommend adding new Zoneloc hooks to this guide. It is a cool new design that locks fish in the main bend quicker and protects from them barb. Also with Zoneloc’s offset main bend it keeps fish in the “sweet spot” and helps increase fish retention.

For me one of the worst things about fishing with gloves is losing dexterity. If you are like me and looking for a glove that is tight-fitting. A glove that will keep your hands warm, but also give you control and feeling of your reel, rod and lures I would recommend the Icearmor Dryskinz Gloves.

Octopus hooks are short-shank hooks that feature a round shank and bend, but it’s not as dramatic as circle hooks. Octopus hooks are often used for bait fishing when minimal hook weight and size is essential for a natural presentation. These hooks are great for hooking a leech through the sucker. The Bass Pro Shops XPS Octopus hook is a good example and highly rated. A mosquito hook is a variation on this style.

My grandson and I did not like it. We played with other people and they were confused if we look at the pictures or the numbers which did not make sense.

Fishing lures come in many shapes, colors and styles. There are crankbaits, spinnerbaits, umbrella rigs, topwater frogs and rats and who-knows-what, jerkbaits, jigs, buzzbaits and a whole lot more. Lures are designed for specific techniques, and to be fished a certain way. In some cases fish can’t get enough of a certain lure at one time of year, then won’t look at it at other times. Key to fishing with lures is experience and an open mind. Learn what your fish want to eat, then match it with your lures, but always be ready to learn a new technique or try a different tactic.

Contemporary kayaks can be equipped with after-market fishing accessories such as anchor trolleys, rod holders, electronic fish-finders and live-bait containers. While wiring a massive fish is likely the most intense test you’ll ever put your hands through when fishing, it’s not the only one. Fighting a big fish with rod and reel can be similarly hard on an angler, especially in an unforgiving offshore environment.
Not long ago, kayaks floated far from the mainstream fishing scene. But today they’re the fastest growing segment in angling vessels. Many manufacturers have become involved. Here’s a look at the allure of kayak fishing and how to get started.
