Fly Fishing Tackle – Explained In Plain English
Written by Cynthia Steina on August 28th, 2009When it comes to fly fishing tackle, there are many things that could be considered a part of that group. I will be going over a few of the things that you should have when you are out fly fishing, more than just the fly fishing rod and reel.
You will need a good collection of flies in your fly fishing tackle box. The fly is usually and artificial bait used to trick the fish into biting the hook. Different fish will prefer different bait, some will float on the water while other types of flies might be meant to sink below the water.
The type of line you will be using also plays a big role in fly fishing. Not only do you need a certain pound test if you are fishing for bigger fish, but you will also need line that you will be able to cast efficiently. The line must also match the standards of the fly rod and reel so that you will be able to reel and cast properly.
Part of your fly fishing gear includes what you will be wearing while fishing. You’ll need to have a good pair of waders so you can keep dry while going after your fish. Pick a pair of waders that will meet your fishing situation. Chest high waders are usually a good choice because they allow you to wade in all depths of water.
Another part of the fishing outfit you should have on top of the waders is a fishing vest. This makes it convenient to store some of your fly fishing tackle in. This allows you to have quick access to flies and other things, instead of returning to shore every time you have to make an adjustment.
Besides having hooks and flies in your fishing vest, you will also need a good pair of fishing pliers. These are necessary to pull the hook out of the fishes mouth. Since fly fishing is mostly catch and release you will have to release the fish in a timely fashion to ensure that it will survive, fishing pliers are very necessary to properly remove a hook from a fish.
The last thing you should have as a part of your fly fishing gear is a camera, specifically a water proof camera. If you are a catch and release fisherman, as most fly fisherman are, you will want to take a picture if you are fortunate enough to catch a trophy fish.
These are by far not the only things you will need when you are fly fishing. Personal preferences will vary depending upon the person, but items that are mentioned above are the basics that you will need to begin fly fishing.
