Consider a YakAttack Visicarbon Pro Safety Light and Flag combo to keep you visible on any body of water.

Learn to care for your lures. Its important to keep the hooks of your lures as dry as possible when not in use to prevent rusting. Rusted hooks need to be replaced as soon as possible, as they become greatly weakened and break when you need them the most. You can buy replacement hooks at bait shops and most outdoor supply stores.

Clearly, these two subtly different approaches will varying levels of appeal for different anglers and comparative strengths and weaknesses under changing conditions. There’s no overall “best” method, simply better choices on the day.

There are 7 main types of lures: jigs, spinners, spoons, soft plastic baits, plugs, spinerbaits, and flies. When you finish reading this, you will be able to recognize each of these lures on sight and have an idea of how to fish them (in fishing lingo this is called “Presentation.”)

Safety: “Your top priority when kayak fishing should be safety,” Johnston says, “especially on moving water. Again, never anchor in fast current. Even in slow current, if you don’t feel comfortable anchoring, don’t do it. If you do anchor, use a quick-release system so you can quickly detach from your anchor if necessary. This can be accomplished by using a caribiner clip if you’re using an anchor trolley, or a zig-zag cleat if you’re tying off directly to your kayak.

Fishing is fun, exciting and sometimes challenging. Especially when you’ll be tracking and folding the reel to catch a big fish, you’ll feel the adrenaline rush running through your veins. And the delicious meal after is always the best incentive.

Construction: This bait is precisely the dimensions of threadfin shad…and menhaden. Match the hatch, baby. Fish-fooling Feature: The boot-shaped tail section of this lure is where the magic happens. Cast your lure and point the rod tip toward the water at a 45 degree angle. Move the rod tip downward to a 90 degree angle in a jerking motion. Turn the reel handle 1 turn for every jerk. Move the rod slowly at first, and then gradually increase the speed to copy the movement of a bait fish swimming away.

In preparation for the event I was able to fish Clopper Lake for a couple of hours over the long 4th of July holiday weekend.  I found that a floating Rapala fished along the shoreline like a top water bait, and not a jerk bait, produced decent numbers of fish in the 10-12 inch range.  The plan was to get some fish this way and then switch to either a spinner bait or jig for some larger fish.  To fish the Rapala like a top water I would cast the lure and then let it sit until all the ripples disappeared.  Then I would give it a small twitch with the rod tip and again let the ripples disappear. This process was repeated 2-3 times.  If this did not produce a fish, then I would fish the lure like a jerk bait.

The bottom line in choosing the best fishing kayak for your needs is that there is no one-size-fits all. Before you make a decision on purchasing a kayak for fishing, the most important thing you can do is to take stock of where and how you plan to do most of your paddling and fishing. Identify your needs: Will you be fishing in freshwater ponds for largemouth bass? Navigating streams and rivers to catch smallmouth bass and trout? Poking around saltwater harbors, estuaries and flats for striped bass and bluefish? Or do you plan to venture out into the open ocean and launch through surf? Also, will this kayak be strictly a fishing vessel, or do you plan to use it for relaxation and recreation with your family?

Quick History: This topwater bait was developed in 1939 (although it has a wooden forefather called the Zarragossa). Its side-to-side action inspired the phrase “walk the dog,” which is how most describe the technique of twitching it across the water. Thousands of lures are now built to imitate this action.

If you’re an early riser, get out there before the sun’s up to enjoy a morning fishing session. If the thought of setting your alarm clock for 4:30 gives you the willies, aim for an early evening fishing plan.

Now that you know the basic lures and how they are used, you should have an easier time starting your own collection. Buy only a few at a time, and take the time to learn to fish them. If you know anyone that fishes the same water you do, ask them what kind of lures they like to use and what they recommend.

Andrew has resided in northern New Jersey most of his life and began fishing many of the freshwater lakes, ponds, and rivers in his mid-teens. Entering his 4th kayak angling season, Andrew has already logged more days on the water than most will in a decade. Primarily a freshwater kayak angler, Andrew targets Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Landlocked Salmon, and Pan Fish, although Northern Pike, Walleye and Muskie are his favorite catches.
