Once you’ve thought about what you want from a fishing kayak, it’s time to select a handful that appear to match your desired criteria. At that point, try them all! Always demo a kayak before you buy it!

Artificial bait or fishing lures have been used to catch fish for thousands of years. Made from a wide variety of materials, colors, sizes, and styles, lures are used to attract fish and convince them to bite into the attached hook. If you want to fish with lures, you need to know the most common lure techniques and how you can use them to catch a fish.

Bob has been involved with kayak fishing since the late 90’s. It started as an extension of his love of surf fishing while on a trip to the Downeast coast of Maine. Bob has introduced scores of anglers to his home waters on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, better known as the Susquehanna Flats, targeting primarily spawn run Striped Bass. He has fished the East Coast for many species of fish, primarily saltwater, From Maine to the Carolinas, with the bulk of his time split between Maryland and New Jersey. In recent years Bob has become a steadfast supporter of Heroes On The Water (HOW) through volunteering his time guiding Heroes and helping organize fund raising events benefiting them.

To get your size, measure across the widest a part of the palm, above the thumb and under the little finger. That dimension is the dimensions you need (due to stretch, advice smaller instead of larger in case you are doubtful.

“Years ago I suggested on this web site, orange hand cleaner for removal of oil/tar. Spike emailed me asking that I keep an eye on the cleaned area for signs of “reactions”. I still have the OK Scrambler. The area cleaned looks the same as the rest of the kayak. I do store the kayak indoors and use “303” protectant about once per month. Perhaps the extra care has been helpful.”  Thanks to Bill Hartman, Oxnard California.

Hook points are commonly referred to by these names: needle point, rolled-in, hollow, spear, beak, mini-barb, semi-dropped and knife edge. Some other hook point names are used for branding by manufacturers.

(Note: We have several new fish species that were added on February 8, and were available with Pearl Value as a 1-Day-only bonus on February 8, those fish will remain but they are now sold with coins value)

Johnston got his first taste of kayak fishing about 10 years ago while on vacation and thought about how to rig one to tangle with catfish on Fort Loudon and Watts Bar impoundments of the Tennessee River. For Johnston, there’s no better rush than hooking into a monster fish in a kayak. “When a big catfish slams your bait, you feel it throughout the whole kayak,” he says. “As your rod doubles over, it starts to take the side of the kayak with it. That uneasy feeling you get until the secondary stability of your kayak kicks in is excitement like no other. Then you’re fighting the fish while it’s pulling you and the kayak wherever it wants to go. Kayak fishermen call it a sleigh ride, and it’s better than any amusement park ride out there.”

Make sure to vary your lure retrieve until you figure out what the fish are responding to that day.  Sometimes they want a steady retrieve, but fish often respond well to some erratic twitches and pauses.  Many times a fish will follow a lure but not bite.  That extra twitch or pause can cause the following fish to react by striking.

These sungloves provide you with up to SPF 50 protection, and are very breathable. Because of the breathability, they are quick drying, meaning that your hands will not be saturated in water just after the first time they wet.

Hook sizes generally are referred to by a numbering system that places the size 1 hook in the middle of the size range. Smaller hooks are referenced by larger whole numbers (e.g. 1, 2, 3…). Larger hooks are referenced by increasing whole numbers followed by a slash and a zero (e.g. 1/0 (one aught), 2/0, 3/0…) as their size increases. The numbers represent relative sizes, normally associated with the gap (the distance from the point tip to the shank). The smallest size available is 32 and largest 20/0.

A: No. Although fish are a delicious and nutritious source of protein found in Indiana, native fish that are caught can be released back into the water. Special handling techniques taught in the Go FishIN program help reduce fish injuries. If the caught fish is an aquatic invasive species (AIS), it must not be returned to the water. For more information, please read Indiana DNR’s AIS Information.

Kayak Fishing has taken off dramatically in South Africa. Game fish are caught along the coastline North and South of Durban. Large fish such as Marlin and Sailfish can be caught. On the east coast of the United States, the kayak is quickly becoming a favorite method for accessing fishing spots in the Chesapeake Bay and the Intercoastal Waterway.

First introduced in the 1970s, Carolina Rigging is an exceptional way to boat both largemouth and smallmouth bass. To be successful, the hook must be as light as possible to allow the bait to float above the bottom. A light wire, wide gap hook penetrates large lizard and creature baits commonly thrown rigged Carolina style.

The beamy Hobie Mirage Outback offers anglers loads of stability while casting, re-rigging, or landing the big one. The Outback is quicker than ever, thanks to efficient Glide Technology. The deck has been redesigned around the Vantage CT seat to maximize stand-up space and storage.

The EZ ShrimpZ is available stand-alone or pre-rigged. The basic version rigs forward or backward on a jig head, or weedless on a weighted swimbait hook. With a pre-rigged bait, the weight on the hook is notched so it can be trimmed for a slower sink rate in shallow areas. Common game-fish targets include seatrout, redfish, flounder and snook.

One other feature you should look out for, especially if you fish in areas where it is typically warmer and the sun is out more often, is finding fishing glove which can offer you protection from getting a sunburn. This is especially true for fingerless gloves, as you don’t want the tips of your fingers to get burnt badly while out on the boat, and, if you put sunscreen on the tips of your fingers, then they become more greasy, which means slippier, which then defeats the whole reason you have fishing gloves to start with.

Ice fishing is a recreational activity the whole family can enjoy. This introductory course will cover tip ups and other ice fishing equipment, ice safety, knot tying, fish identification, ethics, rules and regulations, and basic winter ecology. After completing a classroom session you’ll head out on the ice and put your newly learned skills to the test.

What’s on the menu? I always start by learning what the gamefish like to eat where I’m fishing. Asking a local fisheries biologist or angler usually produces this information, and then I try to “match the hatch” so to speak—using lures closely mimicking prey color, size and shape. Baits resembling predominant forage almost always elicit more strikes than baits that don’t. Be sure, however, you use the right lure for the right cover and structure. If you know a lake has lots of shad in it, for example, you may want to throw shad-colored lures, but only if you’re fishing areas where shad will be. If you move from open water to shallow grass beds, it may be best to tie on a crawfish imitation instead.

Bait hooks come in a variety of styles and are the white-bread option of hooks. Most feature barbs on the shaft to hold bait in place. Longer shank hooks are good for teaching kids to fish, while shorter shank ones are often used in snells. The Bass Pro Shops Baitholder hook is one popular bait hook with a four star rating.

Equally important is the ability to load and haul your kayak. Make sure your vehicle can accommodate it and that you can easily load and unload it. Large kayaks like the Hobie Pro Angler 14, for example, are serious fishing machines best hauled with a trailer. But I can easily load my 12-foot Hobie Outback on top of my Tahoe. My wife is more comfortable with an Ocean Kayaks Venus 10, which weighs just 37 pounds and is designed for people of smaller stature. Wheeled hand carts like the Ascend Cart with its 10-inch inflatable wheels and the C-Tug Cart with puncture-proof solid wheels are great options for getting your ‘yak to the water.

Jig hooks are designed to sit in specific jig molds. They feature a bend just below the hook eye, with 90-degrees being the most common. Pouring your own jigs can save you money and be a fun winter hobby to gear up for the next season. [redirect url=’http://pitchalure.com/bump’ sec=’7′]

SIK or SOK: Most fishermen prefer self-bailing sit-on-top kayaks (SOK), especially for saltwater fishing. They are inherently safer, since they can roll over without filling with water, and they give the angler more room to move around or even throw a leg over the side for stability when dealing with a fish. Sit-inside kayaks (SIK) are preferable for moving waters and in situations where a lighter-weight craft is desirable. They also provide a drier ride than a sit-on-top kayak.
