Trout fishing is one of the great American past times. Fresh water trout are plentiful in lakes, streams and ponds. There’s actual quite a few number of trout and all of them are readily available in fresh water areas.

There’s plenty of gear that is offered commercially to help you catch the biggest and the best but really all you would like is a rod some line and a hook.

Rods and reels are the guts of trout fishing. You may use quite a few different types of rods and reels and see success when fishing for trout. The rods and reels are sold by weight not the weight of the rod and reels but the weight that you could expect to hold with the rod and reels.

They are different lengths and different speeds of the reels. Basically what you must fish for trout is a simple rig. If you are new to the sport than you don’t want to spend a bagful of money. There isn’t a guarantees in terms of fishing and extremely rarely does spending more money equate catching bigger fish.

Bait is what is used to get the trout to bite on the line. What type of bait to use all depends on who you ask. There are so a variety of baits that are used it’s really hard to figure out which works best. Some folks swear by night crawlers, some folks swear by bacon. Yes bacon, some folks use peanut butter and bacon.

It is hard to say which is best for trout fishing, a great way to figure out what is going to get the trout within your area biting is to use a trial and error system. Try one bait than try another to see what really gets them going.

Different kinds of bait can either be purchased or many times it’s something that you’ll already have on hand in the house. You may actually dig up a few worms right out of the yard.

Trout fishing is an ideal way to bring the family together and to get a little down time in. It is an activity that is largely free. There are plenty of places where you could possibly cast your line and sit back and relax and spend some quality time getting to know your fishing partners.

Mark Cella trout fishing lakes

Mark Cella trout fishing lakes

With so many would be anglers these days heading out of town to fish for the weekend, some strategy needs to be implemented. You’ll need to know what day of the week the lake you want to fish at has been stocked. The days of catching tons of fish without knowing this are long over, so call the ranger station ahead of time and find out.

So many fisherman now a days hit the lakes and pull out most of the fish within days of it being stocked. So if you want to camp for the weekend, and they stock the lake on Tuesday, well even the most experienced angler may find it a bit more challenging to catch his dinner.

Mark Cella freshwater trout fishing weather

This article isn’t going to cover the basic equipment you must have in order to even begin. It’s knowing what time of day and weather conditions that will also help you dramatically. From my experience fresh water fish love to eat when it’s dark and cold. Early morning and late evenings are best.

If the forecast is rain or snow you’re in luck. And if it’s like that in the very early morning hours, you’ve got the most optimal conditions. It will also be a lot more fun for the true angler mountaineer to have to stay warm in the midst of it all. Just stay of the lake if there’s lightning so you don’t get cooked up for the fishes supper.

Mark Cella lures

OK, so you got there the day after the lake is stalked, it’s 4:00 am, it’s raining and you’re covered, now you need the right bait and lures. Freshwater fish become accustomed to the flavors they were raised with so experimenting with bait flavors is advised, or ask another angler.

Lures however are easy. Just use a smaller one with preferably two hooks and the key is to use shiny when it’s dark and use dark when it’s bright out. In the dark they can see the glittery thing moving around the water. When it light out the shiny lure looks like sunshine. Pretty simple, yet highly effective strategies.

Fly fishing seriously isn’t like throw a rod and a bait wherever and just simply wait for a fish to get it. Fly fishing is an classic fishing procedure that is primarily formulated typically for catching trout not to mention salmon. At present, this kind of fishing is without question expanding and so used to catch pike, carp, bass along with other species.

The primary difference found in fly fishing and normal fishing is in the weight of the bait, sinker and also bobber to launch the cast. Within ordinary fishing, you employ the particular weight of the bait to be able to throw out the line at the same time trout fishing uses weightless bait and a weighted line which guides the actual movements on the water.

Contrary to typical fishing, trout fishing doesn’t necessarily call for any common bait, live or dead. The main objective in trout fishing is to deal with the fly smoothly in order to always be in control of it. Often the fisherman attracts fish aided by the movement on the surface of the water that creates the fly to appear to be an insect.

The exact aspect of the artificial bait will be the initial and most important element to comprehend while understanding fly fishing principles. The idea of trout fishing will be to create an illusion that can blend with a perfect vision of an insect to draw in the fish. Obtaining the correct supplies for fly fishing is absolutely essential if you want to catch many fish from the fishing rods.

Fly rods for fly fishing are usually light in weight however , longer in their structure. The lines specially designed heavier so that you can provide the casting weight. Typically the lines are created to either float or sink and so are generally matched to the fly fishing rod based on the actual weight.

Fishing is a number one hobby of many people. There is nothing better than sitting down to dinner and enjoying fresh fish that you caught. Fly fisherman love to view the beautiful surroundings, see wildlife in action and the privacy one gets to enjoy while fishing on a small stream. Trout fishing tips-small streams are abundant and here are a few of them.

Outnumbering big rivers, small streams are a fine spot to catch trout. Streams feed into a larger river. There are tips for successful small stream fishing. Many fishermen are used to fishing in larger venues like lakes or big rivers. There are tricks of the trade for fishing in a small stream. They are common sense approaches to fishing that everyone can successfully do to help you catch that big one that is out there.

An important tip for fishing in a small stream is to be quiet and move slowly. Unlike large rivers, small streams give fish less room to move around in. It is positive that the fish are located in smaller areas. However, they are more aware of their surroundings and sensitive to disturbances. Creep up the bank in lieu of splashing in the water. Approach the area quietly. Wear quiet clothing not bright ones. Make yourself blend into the background. You want that fish to feel more comfortable and take your fly.

One important tip is to look at your environment prior to casting. Are there any obstructions to a back cast? Should you roll the cast instead? The point is to keeping your equipment while catching the big one. Every deep pool, run or pocket will be different terrain so be alert and aware. Remember that no two areas are alike.

Shorten your casting. This tip is so that your line does not overshoot your target or end up in a tree. Take a breath, take your time and decide what technique is best to cast. If in tight quarters it is not a good idea to back cast. You will snag the line. It is best to roll and cast it.

Most large fish like the deeper pools. Most fishermen know that tip but did you know that fish will move upstream or downstream to feed. Do not forget to look around. Be alert. The fish may be right next to your foot.

Pick your fishing spot. You do not have to go to everyone that has big trees over it. If you have a tendency to get your line hung up, pass on by and find another spot. Remember fishing is supposed to be fun. Do not get frustrated or fed up because of constantly getting your line stuck.

Fishing in a small stream can be productive. There are generally fewer people by the small stream. A fisherman should remember to watch their casting. It does not need to be very long for a small stream. Be aware of your surroundings and tread softly. The fish will hear you that is for sure. Be patient and enjoy the day. Follow these tips and you will surely catch the big one in no time.

Number 1. Always use ultra light fishing gear if you are fishing for trout. Too many times, anglers attempt to use medium-action gear when at the stream trying to snag trout. It’s a big mistake and won’t allow you to catch fish. Instead, you have to use an ultra light rod and reel and the lightest fishing line possible.

Personally, I’ve found that four-pound test mono filament line works best when fishing for trout. Using light line and gear are paramount for trout fishing, especially if you’re fishing small rivers and streams.

Number 2. Be aware of your shadow. Refrain from casting a shadow on the area you will be fishing, particularly when fishing in small rivers and streams. Casting a shadow is a certain way to scare away the larger, older trout from the area. Take my word for it, if you want to catch trout, you must be aware of your shadow.

Number 3. I have never found an artificial bait or lure that is more effective than a a plain old live worm when it comes to catching trout. For me, a live worm simply riding the current in a small river or stream will attract trout more often than not if they are around. The best way to rig a live worm for trout fishing is to use a set of ganged hooks. Ganged hooks and live worms as bait is the perfect combination for trout fishing.

Number 4. Using small spinners, in the 3-7/16 range, are terrific bait for catching trout. While effective in many trout fishing situations, the small spinners are perfect for fishing rivers and streams. Popping your rod tip while allowing the spinner to flow with the current can be especially effective. Using black, browns and other dark colors with gold blades is optimal. Be sure to attach your spinner to your line with a small barrel swivel for best results. Not only will it stop your line from twisting, but it will also ensure that your spinner works efficiently.

Once you use any or all of these tips, you will be well on the way to becoming a much more effective trout angler. That’s it. Just put these tips into practice, as the sooner you do, the more likely you are to reel in the big one that you previously only dreamed about.

White River trout fishing is some of the country’s best. Not only is White River packed with trout, but it also ambles though some of the most beautiful terrain. The Ozark Mountains offer an unbeatable backdrop to a day of fishing on the White River. It is no wonder so many fisherman pick this river as their favorite fishing spot.

The White River stretches through Arkansas and Missouri before finally draining into the Mississippi River. It takes a path of more than seven hundred miles. It travels first to the west, then north, an makes a huge lazy turn to the east where it continues on for its final couple hundred miles. There is all kinds of water on this river. Some of it is slow and easy, other parts are fast and exciting. You will have to decide which type of White River trout fishing is for you.

There are several dams built on the river. These dams add to the already great White River trout fishing. Most of the dams can be found in Arkansas and a couple of them are in Missouri. Perhaps the most well known dam is the Bull Shoals dam. This Arkansas dam is a major tourist attraction.

Just thirty or so miles from the headlands, white river trout fishing begins to heat up. It is worth noting that the water change considerable throughout the year. During the dry season, the river slows to a crawl. During the wet season it is much higher and faster.

The river becomes colder after it hits the Bull Shoals dam. This dam adds significantly to the fishing. It provides the ideal habitat for trout. In addition, the state stocks this part of the river much more than the rest of the river. White River trout fishing near Bull Shoals is a favorite of many anglers and it is a popular fishing destination.

Not Just Tiny Trout

White River trout fishing is known for its share of large trout. Thousands of trout are stocked each and ever year. Enough of these survive the season to grow quite large. Indeed, fisherman can expect to catch five to ten pound browns. Similarly, there are plenty of six to ten pound rainbow trout to be caught. The brown trout record is for a 33.5 pounder. The rainbow record is still at 19 pounds and was set back in the seventies.

White River trout fishing remains popular year after year. It isn’t hard to imagine why. With so many monsters ought there to be caught each year, it is no wonder so many anglers enjoy the river. Additionally, the Ozark Plateau provides one of the most beautiful backdrops in the country. If you haven’t enjoyed fishing the White River yet, you’d better plan a trip while the fishin’ is good.

What is the best trout fishing bait? It is the bait that allows you to real in fish! Most fisherman have a favorite bait. Their favorite is generally influenced by the type of fishing they do and by what has worked best for them recently.

When the fishing season is just getting going, the fish are generally a bit lazy. It might seem that they have little interest in most trout fishing bait. Often bait small, fast moving bait is the best choice. This bait will excite those lazy lunkers and earn you a hit.

A classic trout fishing bait that can yield great results is the night crawler. Night crawlers are irresistible to most fish, because they squirm around under the water. Large worms can be cast a fair distance, but smaller worms are too light to cast very far. Another potential pitfall with worms occurs when fishing fast moving water. The worms can easily fall of your hook.

Insect larvae are another popular choice. Insect larvae come in many shapes and sizes. Larvae provide one of the most versatile trout fishing bait options. Whether you use a small caddis larvae or a large stone fly, you will see results. The hellgrammite is a great choice too. It moves around a lot and has a tough exoskeleton that keeps it on your hook, even in moving water.

Watch That Shadow

Some new fisherman can’t figure out why they don’t catch fish. Even when using the same trout fishing bait as their neighbor they don’t land a thing. This is often because they are too noisy and continually spook the fish. However, if you take care to be quite, you can often pull numerous trout out of the same patch of water.

Another potential way to put the fish down, is to accidentally let them see you. This is a common mistake when fishing close to the shore or along a river. Do you know where your shadow is? If your shadow is moving over the water you plan to fish, then you probably wont’ catch a thing, no matter the trout fishing bait you use. Remember fish are looking the direction they expect to see food. For rivers and streams, that is usually upstream.

Another common trout fishing bait is chub. Some fisherman cut strips of chub and use it as bait. This can be a good way to go if you don’t have luck with anything else or if you happen to snag a sucker. You can quickly turn that mis-catch into bait. No matter the trout fishing bait you use, you’ll want to time your fishing accordingly. Many fisherman believe the earlier morning or lat evening to be the optimal fishing times.

There is plenty of information about fly fishing on the internet. For additional information checkout this site on trout fishing bait.

Using the correct tapered leader length and tippet size for the type of fishing you are about to do is critical to catching and landing fish. An undersized tippet can result in the angler breaking off their fish or an oversized tippet may result in a poor presentation and spooky fish. Here are some outlined rules of thumb for selection of leader lengths and sizes of tippets. These rules will give you the basic information needed to determine proper choice of leader lengths and tippet sizes.

By definition a rule of thumb when it applies to Fly Fishing means; having wide application but not intended to be always reliable in every situation. Accordingly here are some rules of thumb.

Rule of thumb on selecting leader length and size is to use the strongest test leader you can for the size of fish you are pursuing, in conjunction with the smallest diameter size adjusted to fishing conditions of wind, water and fly size so your fly presentation will be natural and not spook the fish.

When fishing clear water with also the possibility shallow water where fish are holding use as long a leader as you can properly cast. In windy conditions or on small streams where fish will be holding closer use a shorter leader for better turnover and presentation of the fly.

. It is suggested that the following conditions be a guide in leader length selection:

A 6 foot leader for trout on very small brushy brooks or with sinking fly lines.

A 7.5 foot leader for trout is used on creeks that are less than 20 feet wide and in lakes when using intermediate or sink tip lines and when fish are not overly spooky.

A 9 foot leader for trout in streams that are wider than 20 feet where the water flow is mostly riffled and where the fish are not to spooky.

A 7.5 foot leader for trout in streams that are less than 20 feet wide and in lakes when using intermediate or sinking tip lines and when fish are not overly spooky.

A 15 foot leader length is used for extremely spooky trout in gin clear water including spring creeks, lakes and rivers.

Rule of Thumb for selecting which X tippet size to use is dependent on the size of fish you are going after and the size of fly you want to use.

A tippet is given an X number which is determined by its diameter in thousandths such as 1X, 2X, and 3X etc. The X diameter can be determined quickly by taking the number 11 minus X equals the diameter in thousands. As an example for a 6 X tippet it would be 11- 6 = 5 and equates to a 6X tippet which is .005 thousands in diameter.

Rule of Thumb most tippet sizes will support three to four fly sizes before they affect leader turnover and a lifelike presentation

For determination divide the hook size you are using by 3 or 4 . For example a size 12 fly divided by 3 equals a 4 X tippet or a size 12 fly divided by 4 would equal a 3X tippet. Now let the conditions of wind, water and size of fish you are after dictate which leader length and tippet size you choose. If you have chosen to light of a tippet you may experience poor turnover of the leader, the fly may spin or the leader may twist, fly’s may break off while casting or hooking and trying to land the fish. These are signs of to light of a tippet for the size of the fly. Conversely with to heavy of a tippet poor presentations may result with leader shy fish.

Here is a chart of common X leader sizes and corresponding diameters, strengths and recommended fly sizes

X Size Diameter Strength Fly Size OX .011″ 15.5 lbs 1/ 0-4

1X .010″ 13.5 lbs 2-6

2X .009″ 11.5.lbs 4-8

3X .008″ 8.5 lbs 6-10

4X .007″ 6.0 lbs 12-16

5X .006″ 4.75 lbs 14-18

6X .005″ 3.5 lbs 16-22

7X .004″ 2.5 lbs 18-24

8X .003″ 1.75 lbs 22-28

One must have a good assortment of tapered leaders and tippet material sizes available at all times. There are many situations that will require switching leader sizes in the same day if not the same hour.

In conclusion, leader length size and strength equate to fly presentation and catching and landing fish once hooked. When it comes to leader length, and tippet size remember conditions of wind, water, size of fish and fly size dictate. Then use the strongest test leader you can for the size of fish you are seeking in conjunction with the smallest leader diameter size matched to the fly. If adjusted to these conditions fly presentations will be natural and your chances of hooking and landing fish increased.

As an outfitter, one would think that the amount that is paid for a guided trip would be incentive enough for hunters to make sure they are fully prepared for the hunt. Every year, it is surprising the number of hunter’s who show up ill prepared. They show up unprepared even when they have been sent rifle sighting instructions and clothing and equipment lists and area topography maps. This lack of preparedness can take many forms including the lack of proper sighting in of weapons, not being in physical shape for the demands of the hunting area, and lack of proper clothing for hunting conditions etc.

The intent of this article is how to properly dress for the hunt. This dress code will help all prepare to meet the potentially extreme weather conditions that can occur in the rugged mountains of north Idaho or other parts of the rocky mountain west during the fall / winter / spring hunting seasons. During this time of year you will need to be prepared for extreme changes in weather conditions including; hot dry weather, rain, sleet, and freezing conditions with deep snow.

Being properly dressed is often overlooked however for your safety as well as your added hunting enjoyment dressing properly is an essential part of the hunt.

To assist you preparing your clothing the following includes some suggestions that should be helpful. The law of staying comfortable on the hunt is dressing in layers. You will want clothing that will transport perspiration moisture away from your skin and trap a layer of dead air around your body. The emphasis on clothes to bring should be placed on layering. Please avoid the mentality of one layer does all syndrome in preparing your clothing for the hunt. For example a snowmobile suit protects people from the elements who are not moving much to generate their own body heat. Once they start the slightest movement excessive sweating occurs inside the garment. Once the garment is wet the process of wicking heat away form the body occurs. The battle of the sweat and freeze cycle is induced by improper layering of clothes. This is a battle you will not win and one you will want to avoid. Also during your hunt it is very important that you pay attention to your food and water intake. The demands of the hunt require energy and hydration in association with monitoring your clothing needs. Before you break out in a sweat it is wise to delete at least one layer. Once you stop activity it is important that you have a warmer layer to put on.

LAYER 1 Moves moisture away from skin by absorbing or wicking it toward the outer layers. Appropriate garments are thermal underwear made of polypropylene or capaline. Underwear should be quick drying, durable, of medium weight and contour fitting. Do not use loose fitting garments for your first layer.

LAYER 2 The second layer continues to move moisture away from the skin and body. It also provides warmth by trapping dead air around the body. Appropriate garments include; wool, pile, or fleece tops and bottoms and wool , pile or fleece shirts and sweaters.

LAYER 3 The third layer provides protection from the outside elements of wind, rain and snow. Some clothes in this category are referred to as Waterproof and Wind Resistant Breathable garments (i.e. Gor-tex) are good because they continue moisture movement away from the body.

Suggestions for Clothing For warm weather conditions cotton is comfortable and ok however for cold weather conditions cotton does not wick and absorbs moisture and should be avoided. Remember the weather can change very quickly. For cold weather conditions the following is suggested; Inner Layer Thermal Underwear / Polypropylene or capline Thermal sock liners Thermal glove liners Insulation Layer Wool socks Shirts and sweaters / Wool, Fleece, Pile. Pants / Wool, Fleece Protective Layer Pants / Wool, Gor-tex Gloves, 2 pair Hat with ear protection Jacket, Rain Gear, Gore-Tex Boots / water proof treated Packs with felt liner for snow, include Gaiters for deep snow.

Please note the weather for September Archery Season is usually warm days, cool nights or rain conditions and possibly light snow. The October Rifle Season can include clear warm days, cool nights, rain or snow. The November Muzzleloader season is usually clear cold days, sleet, or deep snow. The Spring Bear Season can include clear warm days, cool nights, rain or snow. The Mt. Lion season is usually clear cold days, sleet /snow and deep snow. For the Archery, Muzzleloader, Spring Bear and Mt. Lion seasons please wear the appropriate camo clothes. For the rifle season please wear hunter orange. (Hat and Vest)

In conclusion, the key to a safe and comfortable hunt is dressing in proper layers.
