Cold weather fishing glove reviews all agree that you want to pay close attention to the material used in construction. Most gloves designed for cold weather fishing trips are made from neoprene or a latex material. Both types of material are capable of protecting your hands from the cold, along with cuts from fins, scales and even sharp teeth. If you are planning on filleting your catch as soon as you bring it in you will probably want a pair of neoprene gloves since they material does offer greater dexterity.

Adding to this from my experience, there are three primary options: paddle, pedal, or power. Having a fair amount of experience with all three, pedaling is more efficient than paddling most often, and in big-water settings, a battery-powered motor is a game changer. My original pedal kayak didn’t have reverse. This meant constantly using the paddle to move in reverse, eliminating hands-free operation. It also had a range of motion like climbing stairs—not the greatest on aging knees.
If you are planning on fishing in cold weather you need the right gear, and this includes a pair of protective gloves. While we can’t choose the right pair for you we can help you make an informed decision, which is why we have the best cold weather gloves for fishing showcased below.
The tacky Diamond-Grip has been directly injected onto the nylon mesh palm, which gives you a better grip in the water. The back of the gloves is vented foam mesh to keep your hands cool while you’re wearing them. The neoprene cuff has Velcro closures to keep the gloves attached and keep water out.
In reality, there’s nothing to be gained from imposing such an archaic class system on the world of fishing. Each style of angling has its strengths and weaknesses, and expertise in any form requires dedication and skill. We should celebrate them all!
Fish-fooling Feature: Although it’s a very small part of the design of this lure, the line-tie is very important. Positioned beneath the nose, a twitch on slack line makes it dart to the side, which has proved irresistible to any fish that will eat bait on the surface, from large and smallmouth bass to tarpon.
For many fisherman, gloves are an essential piece of equipment. When cleaning fish, you want to ensure you filet the fish, not your fingers. And if you’re more of a catch and release guy, gloves will allow you to grip the fish without squeezing the fish (and damaging vital organs). Wetting the gloves will also ensure you don’t remove the fish’s protective slime layer while handling.
Gap: Narrow gaps are best suited for live baiting, when hiding the hook is important. A wide gap excels when used with thick-bodied baits penetration through the baits body and into the fish is required.

“Berkley can now change the solidity or softness of a bait based on new processes and combinations of active ingredients,” he says. “Some are derived from natural ingredients, while others are completely synthetic.” Berkley makes a variety of Gulp! shrimp imitators, including the Hollow Shrimp (pictured), Mantis Shrimp, Ghost Shrimp and original Shrimp.
Color: Start out with a basic selection of black, white and chartreuse, and those colors will probably do the job. My favorite color on the Mississippi River was yellow. My top producer color on Oregon’s John Day River is motor oil or brown. Black and white are always contenders. Experiment in your area, and you’ll be able to dial in the local color preferences.
Saturday’s forecast called for some light rain and scattered showers until around 8am. The scattered showers ended as forecasted but not before they kept some of the HOW attendees at home so we were left an over-abundance of HOW guides. This allowed me to get on the water and fish in the month long Mid-Atlantic Kayak Bass Fishing’s July online tournament. During last week’s scouting trip I was able to get a pair of small fish to submit to the online tracking system. The plan was to again use the floating Rapala to get some fish and then throw a spinner bait or a jig for some bigger fish. Mother nature had other ideas.
Classes are designed primarily for first time anglers, age eight and older. They range from four to twelve hours, depending on discipline, and are taught statewide, year round, by trained volunteer instructors.

Jim has been fishing the waters of New Jersey and New York his entire life, getting his first (and only) magazine cover, the cover of the Fisherman Magazine at age 10 with a brook trout caught on the South Branch of the Raritan River in Califon, NJ. Whether you are fishing icy rivers for salmon or steelhead, wiring big blue marlin in a warm ocean, ice fishing on a frigid frozen lake or doing just about any other type of extreme angling, a good pair of gloves should go with you. This small investment will pay immediate returns in comfort and safety. Your hands and feet are the first parts of your body to signal your brain that it’s getting pretty darned cold outside, so a good pair of gloves will help keep you warm physically and mentally. They will also protect your hands from nicks, scrapes, cuts and worse when handling the toothy, thrashing fish you are leadering and landing.
Fish Finder: Companies like RAM, Scotty, and Yak Attack have a variety of mounts to install and remove fishfinders. Many kayaks today have a dedicated scupper hole for mounting a transducer. This allows you to launch and beach your kayak without damaging it. Most kayak fishermen power their sonars with small 7- to 9-amp-hour batteries. Johnston uses a small, waterproof lithium battery from Nocqua Adventure Gear designed for powering them.
Social Bonding: Sharing a fishing experience helps strengthen relationships with family and friends. It also offers a person the chance to give back to society through mentoring others in the pleasure and importance of being good stewards of our natural resources.
The Sportsman’s 12-foot length covers distance and maintains good ground speed for trolling and paddling quickly in open ocean conditions, and the ultra-wide tail increases overall stability to move and rotate freely when reeling in a big fish. There’s plenty of space on the deck to hold a cooler box and still have room move around. Bungee tie-downs help carry gear and Scotty mounts in front of the standing area are ideal for accessories.
The type and size of lure is generally determined by the fish species that you’re targeting. Although there is no strictly defined role for the various lures, the idea is to match a lure as well as possible with a fish’s natural prey.
Trolling plugs generally need to run straight to work well. If a trolling plug is not running straight, you can often “tune” it by bending the eye ring slightly to one side or another with some pliers.
