Spoons are metal lures designed to mimic the action of a swimming baitfish or minnow. They’re one of the most popular of all fishing lures because they’re easy to use and are versatile. Depending on where and how you’re fishing, you’ll want the right spoon – casting, weedless (or topwater), jigging or trolling spoons. Different spoons have different actions. And there are a variety of colors depending on the type of water and species you’re fishing. Ask your tackle shop which ones you need.

Method #2: thread the worm onto the hook so the worm lies flat. The point of the hook should be just a bit exposed, and the eye of the hook should be hidden inside the worm. In a section of the stream with a rocky bottom and minimal vegetation, cast the worm and allow it to sink to the bottom. Retrieve it extremely, almost painfully, slowly without twitching. You will feel the weight of the rocks against the sinker from time to time, but just keep reeling slowly — no jerking. The line will wrap around a rock and the worm will dangle downstream from the rock, appearing to swim upstream. Once the worm comes around the rock, it will be washed back downstream until the line again wraps around a rock. It will then begin swimming upstream again. So, the big picture is this. The worm swims up, flips down, swims up, flips down, and so on. It’s truly neat. It’s very important that you use small sinkers with this presentation. Larger sinkers will get hung up on the rocks. So if you need a lot of weight, it’s better to use a line of small sinkers. It’s also important that you use a heavier line, since the rocks will wear on the line due to friction. A flourocarbon leader would come in handy, for that reason.

If the player gets all four suits of the same rank, then they can put the cards face up in front of them. For example, if you already had a nine of hearts, clubs, and spades; then you picked up the nine of diamonds from the pool, you then get to place the set of nine cards down in front of you and you get another turn.

Keep a finger on the line: You will be able to feel a “strike” or a “hit” easily this way without staring at the bobber. It, also, may have the appearance of receiving a strike, but it may just be the water that is causing it to bob up and down, remember that the bobber follows the movements of the fish. If it quietly swims away against the current it is a strike.

Got some good kayaks here. I personally like the old town lineups coming out this year, especially the predator, I was wondering if you had any information on brands here i kind of see more of a list of kayaks but find it hard to get a concrete recommendation. What is your opinion on a brand ranking like this list here? http://www.kayakerguide.com/best-fishing-kayak/ Agree or disagree? based on their brand section they dont even mention oldtown so im a bit lost. Cheers! great article.

“Years ago I suggested on this web site, orange hand cleaner for removal of oil/tar. Spike emailed me asking that I keep an eye on the cleaned area for signs of “reactions”. I still have the OK Scrambler. The area cleaned looks the same as the rest of the kayak. I do store the kayak indoors and use “303” protectant about once per month. Perhaps the extra care has been helpful.”  Thanks to Bill Hartman, Oxnard California.

The favorites include twister tails, rubber shad and specialized rubber worms designed just for trout. These are all very simple to rig and use. A small or black twister tail or plastic shad rigged on a jig head can be cast a good distance and retrieved in a straight line at a moderately slow speed with great success. The tails of these lures offer all the action you need to trigger a strike from a hatchery fish or even a big monster looking for protein power snack. You basically fish these lures just as you would a straight-line spinner. The plastic worm is fished differently, however.

Get a variety of lures to experiment. The primary purpose of fishing with a lure is to imitate as best as possible the movements of a fish’s natural prey. Consequently, there is an enormous variety in the materials, colors, and shapes of fishing lures, each suited for a particular scenario, or fish. There’s no such thing as “the best” lure and colour combination to use, so it’s good to get a variety and see what works best for you and the fish you’re trying to catch.[1]

Shank: The relatively straight portion of the hook which extends from the eye to the first bend. The length of the shank helps determine physical weight and the distance from the eye to the hook’s point. This distance helps determine the length of bait that can be used with a certain hook. Beginner anglers might imagine that a hook is a hook. But the pros know that’s not quite true – there are many styles to choose from and gaining experience will help define which is best for your needs. Treble hooks are a great choice when using artificial lures, but also deliver solid performance with cut bait. If quick and easy baiting is a priority, straight hooks are ideal. Taking on a species known for putting up a powerful fight? Offset hooks sink in and hold tight to ensure your catch doesn’t lose the hook before bringing it in.

Gunpowder Falls – From Prettyboy Reservoir in N Baltimore Co., downstream to Loch Raven Reservoir in lower Baltimore Co.; 10 miles of “world class” trout fishery; includes put and take areas, as well as catch and release.

Treble hooks feature three bends and points in one hook. Trebles provide greater coverage for artificial baits such as crankbaits, jerkbaits or topwaters. Bait anglers also use trebles. Cut bait for catfish or threading minnows for trolling salmon or trout are examples where trebles are regularly used.

In reality, there’s nothing to be gained from imposing such an archaic class system on the world of fishing. Each style of angling has its strengths and weaknesses, and expertise in any form requires dedication and skill. We should celebrate them all!

Great article. One of the simplest lures amongst several hundred in 4 very large tackle boxes. I’ve even caught rainbow trout on Blue Ridge parkway to snook off the beaches of Gulf Shores with these jigs. I like your site.

For more advanced rigging, Scotty and YakAttack make gear tracks that make it easy to remove or reposition rod holders and other accessories like a GoPro camera. Many new accessories are designed to mount on Scotty bases or Gear Head Track Adapters so anglers can modify ‘yaks to fit their changing needs without drilling holes in the hull.

There are many different designs of gloves as well, which can help you display your own personality. In addition to this, there are some gloves which can be multi-purpose, where you can both fish and hunt with them, for example. There is nothing that says you only have to use gloves as fishing gloves.

Recreation: Having a bad day of fishing still beats a day in the office or tending to house chores. The most common reason you will find with people who like to fish is that it is simply fun, whether you enjoy trolling for stripers or outwitting a weary brook trout with a hand-tied fly that imitates an insect the size of a pin head.

Other than the fact that you can’t wear them for filleting, these fishing gloves from Rapala are a great choice for almost any angler. Since they come with a long lasting latex coating they have plenty of insulation to keep your hands warm and dry, even in cold temperatures.

A crank lure – more commonly known as a crankbait – is a fish-like hard lure or plug designed to swim under the surface, often made of plastic or wood. Some are combined with replaceable soft plastic tails.

Effectiveness: The jig is designed to mimic a minnow, or represent some other food source. Sometimes, a properly-fished  jig will cause a reflexive strike for a game fish. While I have a tackle box full of various lures, I generally start out with a jig, and seldom have reason to switch.

Try a crankbait lure. One of the most recognisable of fishing lures, a crankbait is usually made of plastic or wood and used primarily to fish for bass. This lure often features a bill on the front that looks a lot like a duck. Generally, the bill on the crankbait lure allows it to die to a pre-defined depth, allowing anglers to work a particular column within the water. Many crankbaits come with additional features such as trailing hooks and rattlers.

This complete anchoring system for your canoe, inflatable boat or other small watercraft comes in a small, easy-to-store package. The 3-1/3-lb. anchor has four fold-in flukes to get a secure hold on the bottom and is compact enough to pack away in the smallest of storage spaces.

I bought this product for my 2 year old at Christmas. I assumed it would be similar to other magnetic fishing sets, unfortunately, that was not true. The fish have to be turned upside down to be “caught” (not showing what the fish is since the magnet is on the back). Therefore, the fish will fall out of the tin when they are turned around to catch, making travel with the game difficult. The fishing rods are poorly made (most of ours have came apart or already missing the magnet). Save yourself the headache and go for the more expensive product.

A proven combination of roll, wiggle and flash which suspends at rest that the monsters just can’t resist. Combines a weight-transfer system for increased performance, 3-D eyes and a strong nickel hook for incredible holding power.

Looking at fishing magazines, books, videos, and TV shows, it’s easy to assume that lure fishing is the dominant style of recreational angling around the world. Certainly, lure fishing receives the lion’s share of media coverage. However, this perception is far from reality. Day in and day out, many more fishers use natural baits than artificial lures. The angling media’s heavy bias toward lure and fly fishing is a clear reflection the personal preferences of most writers and presenters, not to mention a tacit acknowledgement of the lure and fly fishing’s tendency to generate far more in the way of advertising revenue than “humble” bait fishing.

If the person asked does not have any cards of the named rank, they say ‘Go fish!’. The asker must then draw the top card of the undealt stock. If the drawn card is not the rank asked for, the asker keeps it, but the turn now passes to the next player to the left.

Handling the fishes are pretty easy with this fishing glove. If you are a professional fisherman, you will know how frustrating it is to handle or release large fishes. The added grip makes it sure to handle and release the fishes more easily.

Rapala – Rapala has a couple of different gloves for you to choose from, which focus on ice fishing. Their glove options are full fingered, and are lined with Thinsulate ® to ensure your hands stay warm throughout your entire ice fishing expedition. Not only this, but the gloves come equipped with hook and loop wrist closures, so it is much easier to get your lines ready, compared to having to attempt to fumble the lures with your covered fingers. Their gloves also work well in icy and freezing rain conditions, and come in a variety of different sizes.

This British version of the game is played with a special pack of 44 cards depicting the mother, father, son and daughter of eleven families. Everyone contributes equally to a pool, all the cards are dealt, and the player to dealer’s left begins. The player whose turn it is asks another player for a specific card; the asker must already hold at least one card of the same family. If the player asked has the card it must be handed over and the asker continues by asking the same or another player for another card. If the asked player does not have the wanted card they say “not at home” and the turn passes to them (not to the left in this version). Completed families are placed face down in front of the owner. When all families are complete, the player with most wins half the pool.

Safety: “Your top priority when kayak fishing should be safety,” Johnston says, “especially on moving water. Again, never anchor in fast current. Even in slow current, if you don’t feel comfortable anchoring, don’t do it. If you do anchor, use a quick-release system so you can quickly detach from your anchor if necessary. This can be accomplished by using a caribiner clip if you’re using an anchor trolley, or a zig-zag cleat if you’re tying off directly to your kayak. Color – Fish can see color. Using a variety of colors to attract fish is a great way to test and hone your angling game. Remember to consider the depth and clarity of the water you’re in. Even the flashiest lures won’t do much good in deep or murky water.

Standard J-hook fishing hooks can be used for a wide variety of fish and are popular for many beginners. If you’re looking to tailor your hook to your technique or bait type, you can choose from circle hooks for live bait saltwater fishing, treble hooks for plug lures and other crankbaits, in-line hooks for tournament and recreational anglers, or offset hooks for big game and bottom-fishing. There are also a number of eye options available, including open eye hooks, welded eye hooks and closed eye hooks. With more than 50,000 products in stock, plus no hassle returns and exchanges, you’re sure to get hooked in no time.

Learn to rip the surface. Use a surface lure to skip your lure across the surface to mimic the behavior of a flying insect or some other kind of prey. This can be especially useful in catching sunfish or other shallow-water freshwater fish.

The Lindy fish handling glove is fitted for your hands, and has a Velcro strap to ensure it stays tight on your hand. This glove is also machine washable, so it will stay clean and durable throughout the entire time you need it.

There are also some fishing gloves which have a fingerless design. This does not mean that your entire fingers are exposed, but just the tips of each of your fingers are without a glove cover. Clearly, this type of glove is intended for warmer weather, and not for ice fishing. These kinds of gloves are just another design feature, to help you determine what kind of feel you like best. Some people like to have their tips of their fingers exposed, as they feel it gives them a better grip than any glove can at the tip – others don’t notice a difference. This just comes down to what kind of glove makes you most comfortable in the weather environment in which you fish the most often.

Whether you are relocating trout with the Rapala Marine Fisherman Glove, recreating “The Deadliest Catch” with the Glacier Glove Alaska River Flip-Mitt Fishing Glove or demonstrating your filleting prowess for the neighborhood fish fry with the Lindy Fish-Handling Glove, we’re confident that one of these products will satisfy your needs.

Anglers often experiment with a wide range of lure colors before determining one that entices the most strikes, but learning some basic tips can help narrow the range of colors from which the selection should be made. (Keith Sutton photo)

These sungloves provide you with up to SPF 50 protection, and are very breathable. Because of the breathability, they are quick drying, meaning that your hands will not be saturated in water just after the first time they get wet.

Some people play that when the stock runs out, you carry on playing until all the cards have been made into books. Obviously after the stock has run out there is no ‘Go Fish!’. If the person you asked doesn’t have the card asked for, the turn passes on.

For fishing, kayaks offer advantages over other boats. Consider their stealth in approaching fish; their extremely shallow draft to get through impossibly skinny water; and their light weight and small size, which allow them to be launched in areas far removed from boat ramps. In addition to those functional traits, kayaks offer anglers a sense of tranquility and connection with the environment that cannot be attained by rocketing across the water at 70 mph.

One of the most effective (and one of the first plugs you should add to your tackle box) is the long, narrow minnow imitation in three to four inch length, the original is made by Rapala. It floats when its not moving and dives shallowly when it’s retrieved. Add a split ring to the eye if it doesn’t have one. Cast it out and wait until the rings on the surface of the water dissipate, then retrieve it slowly or fast, stopping suddenly and maybe throwing in an occasional twitch.

Luckily, anglers can find several good options. While in the old days Perry would battle marlin with custom-made “leather fireplace gloves with padding in the palm’s heel,” companies such as AFTCO now offer manufactured gloves designed to protect hands in the same fashion.

By adding weight to the hook, instead of on the line, finesse baits appear smaller and less clunky. Weighted hooks are far more weedless as they eliminate the sliding weight which can snag in vegetation.

Wendel says that a comfortable seat is essential for long days on the water. “Hobie recently mounted Vantage CT seats in all their kayaks,” he says.” They feature an adjustable height setting—a low position for easier pedaling and a high position to give anglers a better vantage point.” Other seat options include the Skwoosh Big Catch High Back with lumbar support and the Danuu Pacific Angler Fishing Kayak Seat, which has pockets and storage built into the back.

One of the Lone Star State’s largest fishing publications, Texas Saltwater Fishing magazine, recently covered two of Fish Monkey’s hottest new products: the Half-Finger Guide Glove and The Stubby. Both are perfect for anglers pursuing all kinds of game fish, from marlin to redfish and trout.

Not much to say here. Just watch what the other players are asking for so you can know what cards they definitely have. If you’re playing with more than two players make sure to pay attention to what the other players ask each other for and what they say Go Fish too, that way you can learn which cards they definitely have and which cards they definitely don’t have.

If you tend to fish in warmer conditions, then you have to watch the temperature of when you fish. The thicker the fishing gloves you have, the more uncomfortable your hands will be. You will have to find the right balance of thickness for protection versus the comfortability of your hands. There is something to be said for having more protection for your hands, as you can always deal with your hands being sweaty, and you can take the fishing gloves off at times when you are not reeling in any fish. Once again, it all depends upon how comfortable you will feel out on the water with the fishing gloves you purchase.

Get a fishing license. Visit the website of the state’s Department of Fish and Wildlife or the Department of Natural Resources in which you’re planning to fish and obtain a fishing license for information. Typically, there’s a fee in the neighborhood of $40 for a resident and twice as much for a non-resident of the state. You’ll need to get a license for each state in which you catch fish and can typically do this online, though you might need to visit the office in person in some states.

When it’s your turn, select a player you think might have a needed card. Pick one card from your hand of the desired rank. If the player has the desired card, he or she must pass it over. If not, you must go fish. If you get the card you asked for, you get to go again.

Attach your weights and bobbers. If the water is quite swift, as in a river or stream, it is probably best to attach weights (sinkers) to your line about 12″ above your bait. By weighting down your line you will keep your bait in place an inch or a few inches above the floor of the water—right where fish are likely to be hunting.

What’s on the menu? I always start by learning what the gamefish like to eat where I’m fishing. Asking a local fisheries biologist or angler usually produces this information, and then I try to “match the hatch” so to speak—using lures closely mimicking prey color, size and shape. Baits resembling predominant forage almost always elicit more strikes than baits that don’t. Be sure, however, you use the right lure for the right cover and structure. If you know a lake has lots of shad in it, for example, you may want to throw shad-colored lures, but only if you’re fishing areas where shad will be. If you move from open water to shallow grass beds, it may be best to tie on a crawfish imitation instead.

Fish-fooling Feature: Although it’s a very small part of the design of this lure, the line-tie is very important. Positioned beneath the nose, a twitch on slack line makes it dart to the side, which has proved irresistible to any fish that will eat bait on the surface, from large and smallmouth bass to tarpon.

The best all-around bass hook, this versatile performer is used to rig plastics in any number of ways. From Tex-posed to Texas worm rigged or for pitch’in and skipp’in, this hook will do it all. Because of its rigging versatility, it can be used in weeds, rocks and timber.

Lure fishing for trout doesn’t exactly have much of a storied tradition to report on, but it sure is fun. The way to be successful fishing in this manner is fairly cut and dried. It starts with having the right equipment.

Wearing loose gloves will occupy most of your time because you’ll be busy adjusting the gloves. Also, loose fitting gloves will be incapable of fulfilling the very reason you bought those gloves. On the other hand, tight gloves will hinder your movement of fingers, creating a problem in handing the fish.

For me one of the worst things about fishing with gloves is losing dexterity. If you are like me and looking for a glove that is tight-fitting. A glove that will keep your hands warm, but also give you control and feeling of your reel, rod and lures I would recommend the Icearmor Dryskinz Gloves.

Providing effortless control of the fishing equipment, these gloves are made with a latex coating, which provides protection when handling fish. Your hands will not get injured from the gill plates, dorsal fins, and teeth of the fish.

You need hooks that will fit the kind of fish you’re planning to catch. Number 1 hooks work well for many things, but size 8 to 5/0 are more appropriate for some fish. Ask your local tackle shop about the hook sizing system (i.e. 6,4,2,1,1/0, 2/0) and the best tools for the job.

That was a huge downfall for me was the constant reminder that all these women wanted was to have sex. There were times when I was watching this film where I felt a bit of sweetness in my mouth because I thought there was some candy-coating happening. This does not need to happen in a film that is supposed to bring the lesbian lifestyle closer into the spotlight. I never felt that these women in this film were given the best light to show their stuff anyway. From the beginning of the first scene until the last (and all those snippets in-between) all they could talk about was sex. They wanted to have sex more often than I honestly think about in a day. It really made the rest of the non-existent themes seem blurry and unimportant. There was just a consistent lack of togetherness for this film that ultimately hurt it in the long run. This wasn’t a film about women’s rights, but instead a dire attempt to show the similarities between homosexual and heterosexual relationships. I agree that this happened, but just not very coherently. There seemed to be other elements strewn together in a very loose fashion that took away from the overall power of the film. Don’t get me wrong, this could have been a very powerful film about a lifestyle that this world is still not accepting, but instead it went too far to the left (which isn’t bad, except in this case) and chose to go the bleeding artist route instead of the informative, here are the facts route. The black and white photography, the lack of character development (who really was Ely’s partner?), and the cheesy moments between scenes where women talked to me about the illusive “honey pot”. It just wasn’t coming together well for me and eventually fell apart all together.

Fishing with braid while ice fishing can do a number on your hands, and it can wear out your gloves very quickly. Stormr took that into consideration when designing this glove. What you see in the video is one of our earlier prototypes. Think of it as a proof of concept—we wanted to demonstrate the feasibility of this product. Now that we have a foundation, we just need your help to make the little guy in the video become bigger, better, and more elegant with taking it to the market.

For example, you could purchase a fishing glove that is made out of rubber. Although the rubber material will be very inexpensive, it is also very slippery, and can cut easily. Because most of the fish you will be catching have something on them that can slice you, including fins, teeth, scales or gill plates, those areas on a fish can cut thru any normal material with ease. The reason you have purchased fishing gloves to start with is to help protect your hands, not only from the weather elements, but also from dangers that each fish can pose to you.

When it’s your turn, select a player you think might have a needed card. Pick one card from your hand of the desired rank. If the player has the desired card, he or she must pass it over. If not, you must go fish. If you get the card you asked for, you get to go again.

There are also some fishing gloves which have a fingerless design. This does not mean that your entire fingers are exposed, but just the tips of each of your fingers are without a glove cover. Clearly, this type of glove is intended for warmer weather, and not for ice These kinds of gloves are just another design feature, to help you determine what kind of feel you like best. Some people like to have their tips of their fingers exposed, as they feel it gives them a better grip than any glove can at the tip – others don’t notice a difference. This just comes down to what kind of glove makes you most comfortable in the weather environment in which you fish the most often.

Learn to rip the surface. Use a surface lure to skip your lure across the surface to mimic the behavior of a flying insect or some other kind of prey. This can be especially useful in catching sunfish or other shallow-water freshwater fish.

Spoons are curved metal lures. The first spoons were just that, spoons with the handle broken off. Today, spoons can be had (like all other lures) in any color and size. There is a spoon for every fishing situation. The shape of this lure gives it its distinctive action. Spoons move through water with a side-to-side wobble that simulates an injured baitfish, and game fish just love injured baitfish.

Being an industry leader in outdoor apparel and products takes passion, and an understanding of people who love the outdoors as much as we do. That’s why, from cutting edge technology, to our innovative heritage in Bugaboo, our jackets, pants, fleece, boots, and shoes are all tested tough so you can enjoy the outdoors longer.

A chunk of fresh dead shrimp skewered to a J hook was the first bait I ever used to catch a saltwater fish. Casting off a seawall with my dad near the Miami Seaquarium, we caught blue runners, jacks, pinfish, grunts, ladyfish, stingrays and snappers. Not the most glamorous species, but the number of different fish that attacked our shrimp made a lasting impression.

Talking about metallic lures, if weather is going to be sunny and the water conditions are fairly clear, than a silver fishing lure is a good idea. The goal is to choose a fishing lure that stands out and attracts attention. The combination of reflection from the sun and clear water allows silver lures to flash in the water, making them visible from quite a distance. However, if the day is overcast or mostly cloudy, or if the water is darker and cloudy, then a gold fishing lure is the best bet. Gold has superior reflective abilities and can still be quite visible even in darker conditions.

Poppers are small fishing lures used with spin-casting tackle. These fishing baits are very good for pan fish and other fish that feed on the surface such as trout and bass. Poppers get their action from a cupped face carved or molded into the front of the lure body.

Whether you’re spending time with family and friends or hoping to catch dinner, fishing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and come head-to-head with a vibrant array of fish. With the right gear and a little know-how, you’ll be sharing fishing tales with the old-timers before you know it!

Designed with first-time kayak anglers in mind, the Intrepid’s multi-chine hull puts a premium on stability and tracking, yet offers impressive acceleration and speed for its size. It’s equipped with three rod holders and a smartphone holder on the dash.

He spends a lot time trolling offshore for salmon on Lake Michigan in his Hobie Pro Angler 14, and suggests anglers who fish big water add the following items: a VHS radio to communicate with the Coast Guard and other boaters; flares to signal for help; navigational and running lights when operating in low-light conditions; and a safety flag to make your vessel more visible to other boats from a distance and in choppy conditions. Consider a YakAttack Visicarbon Pro Safety Light and Flag combo to keep you visible on any body of water.

The term circle hook refers to a specific design for fishing hooks that causes them to appear circular in shape. Used primarily for live bait fishing, these hooks increase hooking percentages and also help to prevent gut hooking fish. When a strike occurs, the hook slides out of the fish’s throat. The barb does not penetrate until the hook reaches the corner of the mouth. At that point, the hook point pivots and sets for a safe, solid hookup. The primary thing to remember about circle hooks is that they do not require a standard hard, hook set. In fact, setting the hook in that manner will almost guarantee that a fish is lost. Instead, simply cranking down and applying steady pressure works best.

I also really like the design of the cuff. When ice fishing, even with ice fishing gloves, water and snow can get in behind the cuff and get your hands wet. When this happens it is nearly impossible to warm up your hands again. These pair of gloves have two ways to tighten the glove to prevent this from happening. They can either be tighten with a strap or the wrist fasteners.

Weather plays a significant role while choosing the best possible fishing gloves. If you are planning to fish in cold weather or ice fishing, then you need to get an ice fishing gloves. We have mentioned some of the winter fishing gloves at the bottom part of this article. These cold weather fishing gloves will help you to keep your hands warm.

The game is made using html+javascript+css with jQuery used for the animations. All the graphics used for the game I found at OpenClipArt, a great site with free graphics. The excellent playing card images were made by Nicu Buculei, and the player images were made by Gerald G.

The fact is, however, we often worry too much about all these variables and whether or not this color or that will catch the most fish. While knowing why fish may respond in one way or another to a particular color is useful, it’s possible to over-analyze the facts and fail to enjoy our fishing. I much prefer using some basic guidelines that have proven helpful regardless of when and where I’m fishing and what I’m fishing for. Perhaps they will be useful to you as well.

“I expected to have a ton of tangles casting it and that I would only be able to troll it, that is not the case, cast after cast after cast and no tangles. Being able to wifi directly to my phone, I don’t need to wait to get home to find a computer to put my card in. The battery life is great, the night vision is so bright, and footage comes in clear. I fish the Saskatchewan river where you can’t see a foot below the surface and yet my videos come in nice and clear.”

We know that Frabill can make a good ice fishing suit, but the question is can they make a good ice fishing glove? The answer, yes! They make a great ice fishing glove! One such example is the Frabill FXE Performance Task Glove.

Better still, finding, gathering, or catching your own bait rather than buying it from a shop magnifies all these important lessons. Bait collecting teaches an angler a great deal about where the food items fish prey upon live, how they behave, and what they look like. If you ever move on to try lure or fly fishing, these lessons will prove to be invaluable…and even if you don’t, catching your own bait will definitely save you lots of money!

After you’ve selected a kayak, it’s time to outfit it. Avid kayak angler and tournament winner Rob Wendel offers ideas on rigging. “A comfortable personal flotation device (PFD), a pair of rod holders, a crate for storage, an anchor pulley system, and a simple sonar get you started,” he says. One of the more innovative new sonar systems is Vexilar’s Sonar Phone T-Box, which provides WiFi sonar transmission to your smartphone. This eliminates the need to mount a unit. A compatible smart phone is your display.

A lighter line will normally increase the action of lures that dance, buzz, or hum. One way to up your chances of a catch is to keep two rods with you, each with a different size line. If one lure isn’t working on a particular line, just pop it on the next one and give it a shot. The difference in line diameter may be invisible to you, but the number of fish you nab will surely open your eyes.

If there was ever a fish-friendly hook, it is the circle hook. The unique circular design eliminates gut hooking fish even when the bait is swallowed. As the fishermen pulls on the line, the hook slides forward until it reaches the fish’s mouth. Once there, it lodges in the side of the mouth. These hooks are popular in the saltwater world, but are making their way into the freshwater side as well.

Quick history: In 1936, Lauri Rapala, a Finnish commercial fisherman, was sick of baiting hooks. So, he carved cork into the shape of a minnow, covered it with foil from a candy bar, then melted photographic negatives over it to coat the bait. According to legend, he would catch up to 600 pounds of fish per day on this artificial. This early prototype led to what is now a balsa bait that may be responsible for more world records than any other lure.

Many local municipal parks stock fish in ponds that are available for anyone to fish, and the fishing is usually pretty easy and quick for the beginner, though these are often crowded and somewhat dirty. Never crowd other fishermen and encroach on “their spot.”

Shrimp-lure companies remain tight-lipped about the details of their baits, although they will reveal general details of ingredients, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or thermoplastic elastomers (TPE). They will also tell you how the soft baits work and why they catch fish, but I have my own essential techniques after fishing artificials for years. Shrimp basically move in three different ways: fleeing quickly backward, slowly swimming with the current or falling gently to rest on the bottom. Make sure whichever artificial shrimp you utilize successfully mimics one of these three natural movements. Too many anglers are lazy with their lure action or reel too quickly.

This Thai game, whose name means “room card”, is essentially the same as Happy Families. It is played by 3 to 6 players using a standard 52-card pack. All the cards are dealt out as evenly as possible, and the aim is to collect fours of a kind. The player next to the dealer who received the first card in the deal begins. At your turn you ask another player for a specific card by rank and suit (e.g. 6 of diamonds): in order to ask for a card you must have a card of that rank in your hand. If the player you asked has the requested card you receive it and your turn continues. If not, the turn passes to the player you asked. A set of four equal cards is called a room (hông): a player who collects one of these can store the cards face down or keep them in hand. The game ends when all 13 rooms have been collected, and the player with most rooms wins.

Cast your line, and instead of starting to reel in or troll right away, let your lure sink to the bottom. As soon as your line goes slack, give it a tug to simulate a bounce off the bottom. Repeat this bouncing action as you retrieve. This is a great attention-grabbing technique that doesn’t take long to learn and boosts your chances of a bite.

These warm and comfortable neoprene gloves feature a no-slip grip construction that is heavy-duty, yet flexible. Easy-access to index finger and thumb allow for easy casting and knot tying.A secure Velcro wrist closure keeps the gloves in place while also keeping out the cold.

Construction: This bait is precisely the dimensions of threadfin shad…and menhaden. Match the hatch, baby. Fish-fooling Feature: The boot-shaped tail section of this lure is where the magic happens. The narrow piece of plastic that leads to the bulky, wide tail creates a very lifelike swimming action.

Size: For speckled trout, opt for the 3-inch Zara Puppy. This dainty walker perfectly mimics fleeing bait. For yellowfin tuna, toss the 5-inch Super Spook and work it as fast as you can. Make sure you upgrade hooks, though.

These cards are ridiculously stiff, and therefore, virtually impossible to shuffle. They are also very difficult for small hands to hold. And, worst of all, the company will not allow product to be returned. It’s only $6.99, but I dislike wasting money, period. COULD NOT BE MORE DISAPPOINTED OR ANGRY!

Moving clockwise, players take turns asking a specific player for a given rank of card. If someone asks you for a rank that you have, the cards are taken from your hand. if you do not have any cards of that rank, your opponent must go fish, taking one new card from the pile of cards.

Get a variety of lures to experiment. The primary purpose of fishing with a lure is to imitate as best as possible the movements of a fish’s natural prey. Consequently, there is a huge selection of materials, colors, and shapes of fishing lures, each suited for a particular scenario or fish. There’s no such thing as “the best” lure and colour combination to use, so it’s good to get a variety and see what works best for you and the fish you’re trying to catch.

Since you’re here, chances are you already fish from a kayak or you think it’s a good idea.  The first kayak fishing web site to hit the internet in August 1997, it’s been our ongoing mission to help direct anglers into the sport efficiently and cost effectively ever since.

That’s where Animated Lure comes in—a self-propelling lure that takes care of the tedious work for you. You can use that valuable time to bond. After all, fishing is often meant to be a social experience. It can enhance the professional fisherman’s experience, too. Whatever your situation, your focus should be about catching big game, not bobbing the rod up and down and casting the line over and over again.

The initial player is selected at random. The player can then ask one of the other players for a particular rank. For example, you might ask Bill if he has any sixes. You may only ask for ranks that you already have at least one card of. E.g. if you don’t any sixes yourself you can’t ask for them. If Bill has any sixes, then he must give them to you, and you get another turn and can ask again. If Bill doesn’t have any sixes then he will tell you to “Go Fish” which means that you will draw one card from the pile on the table. If you get a six, then you show it to the other players and get to play again. If you get anything else you are finished with your turn and the player next to you plays.

We had another week with copious amounts of rain so the water clarity was murky and the amount of vegetation had not only increased in area but also in thickness. Every cast with the Rapala resulted in treble hooks with clumps of grass.  I continued to throw the Rapala determined to stick with my game plan.  I had purposely left most of my tackle trays back in my truck so I would be forced to stick with a lure/technique until it worked.  This is actually one of my goals for this season – make a game plan and try and stick to it.  Too many times I’ve gone out fishing and spent most of my time switching baits and tying on different lures instead of fishing.  To paraphrase a well-known cliché, plan to fish and fish the plan.  During days of tough fishing this hard to do but perseverance does have its rewards. While it might not be always be the size you are looking for but a small fish is better than no fish.

If you want to find the best fishing gear, but you don’t have time to go through the buying tips and reviews prepared by our research team, this short paragraph should tell you everything you need to know about the best cold weather fishing gloves. After analyzing a lot of feedback coming from both amateur and professional fishermen, we have concluded that the Glacier Glove Premium is the best because these gloves come with precurved fingers that help to prevent fatigue so you can keep tying hooks and stringing line in the cold all day. The fingers are slit to improve dexterity, which is always important when you are fishing. The wrist strap also ensures a secure fit. The gloves are made of neoprene. Neoprene is a material that comes with amazing gripping ability, yet not adding too much weight. Also, neoprene offers better flexibility to the fingers. Maneuvering the equipment during spear fishing is not a problem anymore.

Without going into the finer details of how it works (we do have a patent pending; refer to the FAQ for more info on that), suffice it to say that we’ve done extensive research over multiple years of trial and error and have concluded that there’s nothing like Animated Lure on the market. Sure, there are “lures” that shake and vibrate—but cellphones can do that, too. They’re nothing special. Fishing bait deserves something more sophisticated – something geared specifically towards the art of fishing. With Animated Lure, our aim is to create a truly lifelike fishing lure at an affordable price, enabling us to bring fishing to life.

“Berkley can now change the solidity or softness of a bait based on new processes and combinations of active ingredients,” he says. “Some are derived from natural ingredients, while others are completely synthetic.” Berkley makes a variety of Gulp! shrimp imitators, including the Hollow Shrimp (pictured), Mantis Shrimp, Ghost Shrimp and original Shrimp.

Color: Start out with a basic selection of black, white and chartreuse, and those colors will probably do the job. My favorite color on the Mississippi River was yellow. My  top producer color on Oregon’s John Day River is motor oil or brown. Black and white are always contenders. Experiment in your area, and you’ll be able to dial in the local color preferences.

It was flat magnet pieces with pics of fish on them and the fish poles didn’t even pick up the fish. The magnets don’t work. I got this for my child for a road trip game but I ended up throwing it out.

If you’re going fishing in a boat, bring the necessary gear to be on the water. Life vests and a boating license are required. If you’re going to be on shore, you might want to bring a lawn chair and some waders to keep your feed dry.

Hook that fish. Once you feel a tug on the line or feel the line start to be taken, you will want to “set” your hook. To do this, simply give your fishing rod (and consequently the fishing line) a quick and firm jerk backward and up. If you have a fish on line, it will fight back immediately and your line will follow the movements of the fish.

Many fishermen, especially who are relatively new in the field of fishing chose random gloves over specialized ones. The result is facing uncomfortable situations. Veteran hunters will be the first one to tell you that finding the right pair of fishing gloves is important.

I love kayak fishing, especially kayak fishing for smallmouth and large mouth bass.  I grew up chasing blue gills and tiny smallmouth bass on the Patapsco River in central MD.  Two of my uncles really fostered my love for fishing during our wading trips on the Potomac River near Knoxville, MD. I have been dabbling in kayak fishing since 2009, but it wasn’t until last year that I truly fell in love with the sport.  Last year was a tough year for me personally with the death of my younger brother and I would have been lost were it not for the peace of mind and clarity I get while kayak fishing

For those looking to add power to an existing kayak, the Bassyak is a 12-volt Minn Kota motor adaptable to most hulls. It can be customized with a remote control and lift kit for ease of operation. Another after-market option is the line of energy-efficient Torqeedo lithium-powered motor that can be installed on most kayaks without the weight of traditional marine batteries.

Learn to rip the surface. Use a surface lure to skip your lure across the surface to mimic the behavior of a flying insect or some other kind of prey. This can be especially useful in catching sunfish or other shallow-water freshwater fish.

“Always wear a PFD. It’s best to fish with a partner but if you go solo, tell a friend or loved one where you’ll be and when you plan to return. You should also wear brightly-colored and reflective clothing to make yourself more visible to boaters.”

The cards are thoruoghly shuffled and dealt out to the players one at a time clockwise. Some players will have one more card than others, but this does not matter. The player to dealer’s left begins by asking any other player for a specific card: “Heini, do you have the king of hearts?”.

My granddaughter loves this game – to a point where she brings it over every time she comes to grandma’s house. The cards are laminated and sturdy. Method #1: bend the worm in half and push the hook directly through the bend to maintain a “V” shape to the lure. Cast the worm and allow it to sink to the bottom. Retrieve it slowly with a sharp twitch of the rod tip every second or two. The twitch will close the “V”, while the pause immediately after allows the “V” to open back up, giving the worm a froggy appearance. If you get a bite, you’ll probably set the hook automatically when you twitch it.

In the South, gar and bowfins are common in swampy regions. Flounder and perch are also commonly fished. The Henderson swamp in Baton Rouge is a great spot for Gar, and Lake Pontchartrain is a fishing destination for all sorts of varieties.

Now, while a simple Zebco-style spincast outfit may work fine, they’re not always very good at casting thin flimsy line, which is a necessity. Some of the pricier spincast reels do quite nicely, but a lightweight spinning reel with a medium action 6-foot rod is a better place to start for most fishermen. Some trout fishermen love the challenge of an ultra-light set-up, but this is not necessary. The smaller reel, the smaller the crank ratio. The shorter the rod, the less shock absorber effect you’ll have, meaning you’ll have to use your drag setting and brains to avoid breaking the line. In other words, landing the fish is more difficult. Shorter rods also make it tougher to cast long distances. [redirect url=’http://pitchalure.com/bump’ sec=’7′]

Length: In general, the longer the kayak, the faster it will be and the more easily it will cover distances. The trade-off is a loss of maneuverability in tight spaces and difficulty in transporting the kayak to launch sites.

No one knows more about this subject than Charles Perry. Generally recognized as the top wireman on the planet, Perry has been pulling on huge tunas and marlin from Australia to Madeira and everywhere in between for decades.

There are many regulations regarding fishing, and these regulations differ state by state and region by region. Look for restrictions on using live bait. Many waterways, especially those with natural stocks of fish, require the use of a single, barbless hook with only artificial bait allowed. So, make sure that you aren’t worm fishing in a Gold Medal stream that only allows synthetic flies. The fines you may encounter are more expensive than any caviar!

“Using the GoFish Cam is a step up in the angling experience. The cam hooked on my line seamlessly and I found that the size, weight, and buoyancy of the cam afforded minimal weight change when in the water. I would absolutely use GoFish Cam for any fishing excursion.”

There’s no telling how many species of fish have fallen for this boot-tailed softbait since its introduction in the 1980s.

Construction: This bait is precisely the dimensions threadfin shad…and menhaden. Match the hatch, baby. Fish-fooling Feature: The boot-shaped tail section of this lure is where the magic happens. The narrow piece of plastic that leads to the bulky, wide tail creates a very lifelike swimming action.

Depending upon the material of your glove, this may or may not be a viable option. If you have fishing gloves which are made from a rubber material, then cutting off the finger tips would not be that big of a deal. However, the thicker the glove, the less recommended it is for you to cut the fingertips off of your gloves. This is due to the more material which can be found within the finger area of the glove. If you do cut the fingertips off, then you will need to sew them together so you don’t lose any material within the fingertips that you leave. Once again, this is not really recommended, but if you are in a pinch, then there is nothing truly wrong with it.

Shank: The relatively straight portion of the hook which extends from the eye to the first bend. The length of the shank helps determine physical weight and the distance from the eye to the hook’s point. This distance helps determine the length of bait that can be used with a certain hook.

Construction: The fact that this lure is made of balsa offers two distinct advantages to anglers. First, the inconsistency of wood allows for a lure that will be erratic, which is a good thing. Second, it lets anglers work the bait both on the surface (since it is very buoyant) and beneath.

As they say, attraction is all about confidence. Lures don’t have that delicious wormy taste that fish love, so when they strike, you may only have a second to respond. Don’t second-guess yourself. If you think you have a bite, give a tug and set the hook.

If you are not sure whether you are getting a bite, set the hook immediately.  If you stop and ask yourself whether or not you just got a bite the fish will be long gone.  Except for some soft plastic lures, fish don’t usually hold onto lures for more than a second.

Siwash fishing hooks have a long shank and a straight eye to ensure they sit properly on lures. Siwash hooks are often used on single-hook baits, such as spinnerbaits. They’re also an excellent alternative to factory-provided treble hooks on spoons and other baits. These hooks are handy to replace treble hooks on hard-baits when fishing a zone that limit hook points on a per lure. The Gamakatsu Siwash Open Eye hook is a quality Siwash hook.

The bottom line in choosing the best fishing kayak for your needs is that there is no one-size-fits all. Before you make a decision on purchasing a kayak for fishing, the most important thing you can do is to take stock of where and how you plan to do most of your paddling and fishing. Identify your needs: Will be fishing in freshwater ponds for largemouth bass? Navigating streams and rivers to catch smallmouth bass and trout? Poking around saltwater harbors, estuaries and flats for striped bass and bluefish? Or do you plan to venture out into the open ocean and launch through surf? Also, will this kayak be strictly a fishing vessel, or do you plan to use it for relaxation and recreation with your family?

I bought this product for my 2 year old at Christmas. I assumed it would be similar to other magnetic fishing sets, unfortunately, that was not true. The fish have to be turned upside down to be “caught” (not showing what the fish is since the magnet is on the back). Therefore, the fish will fall out of the tin when they are turned around to catch, making travel with the game difficult. The fishing rods are poorly made (most of ours have came apart or already missing the magnet). Save yourself the headache and go for the more expensive product.

Regulations may limit the size of, number of, and season that a type of fish may be caught, and may require a license to fish. In some cases, only “catch and release” fishing is allowed, which means the fish must be let go. Some bait is illegal in certain areas.

Checking the material of the fishing gloves is essential. A rubber glove would not have the breathability and low weight. Advanced raw materials will help you to have good breathability and allow you to handle the fishes more easily and quickly. The listed fishing gloves are made of high-quality raw materials.

Let the fish tell you what they want.  Don’t stubbornly stick to a favorite lure or presentation even if it is not working.  Fish can be very finicky, especially in highly pressured areas.  Often they will respond to something they have not seen before when they are turning down regularly used lures.

This is Go Fish without the stock pile. All the cards are dealt out as equally as possible to the players. A turn consists of asking a player for a rank (or a specific card if you play that version). If they have it your turn continues; if not the turn passes to the next player player to the left. As in Go Fish, you must have a card of the rank you asked for. Books of 4 cards are discarded. The game continues until all the cards are formed into books, and whoever gets most books wins – or you can score one point per book and play to a target score.

Ideal for either fresh or saltwater fishing, this pair can be washed in the machine, so you won’t need to launder them by hand. They can be left to drip dry. You will enjoy many seasons of service from the gloves.

The eye of a hook, although some hooks are technically eyeless, is the point where the hook is connected to the line. Hook eye design is usually optimized for either strength, weight and/or presentation. There are different types of eyes to the hooks. Typical eye types include the ring or ball eye, a brazed eye-the eye is fully closed, a tapered eye to reduce weight, a looped eye—traditional on Atlantic Salmon flies, needle eyes, and spade end—no eye at all, but a flattened area to allow secure snelling of the leader to the hook. Hook eyes can also be positioned one of three ways on the shank—up turned, down turned or straight.

Strength matters, so be sure to consider construction. Carbon steel delivers the toughness needed for exposure to water, salt and other challenges of marine environments, and tempered or forged construction gives a boost of sturdiness. Chemically sharpened points add extra hardness, while offset fishing hooks and nor-tempering promote reliable performance each time you cast.
