This online version of Go Fish was made by me. My name is Einar Egilsson and over there on the left is my current Facebook profile picture! This is the 8th card game I make, the other ones being Whist, Spades, Hearts, Solitaire, Idiot, Shithead and Crazy Eights. Go Fish might seem like a weird game to have a computer version of, but there were three reasons I wanted to make it:

Get a variety of lures to experiment. The primary purpose of fishing with a lure is to imitate as best as possible the movements of a fish’s natural prey. Consequently, there is an enormous variety in the materials, colors, and shapes of fishing lures, each suited for a particular scenario, or fish. There’s no such thing as “the best” lure and colour combination to use, so it’s good to get a variety and see what works best for you and the fish you’re trying to catch.[1]

Perry spent many years fishing with legendary big-game angler Stewart Campbell, and he recalls that Campbell generally wore a glove on his right hand (his cranking hand) when working on record-class fish with conventional gear.

German Quartett cards are often provided with technical statistics related to the theme of the pack, so that they can also be used to play Top Trumps, which in German is sometimes known as Supertrumpf, and sometimes include a Schwarzer Peter (Black Peter) card so that they can be used for the German equivalent of Old Maid.

Handling the fishes are pretty easy with this fishing glove. If you are a professional fisherman, you will know how frustrating it is to handle or release large fishes. The added grip makes it sure to handle and release the fishes more easily.

Match the color to the water. Using the “right” color of lure is generally determined by water clarity. Murky water and dusk or night fishing requires bright-colored lures more easily seen by fishermen and fish alike. White and red lures are common in these conditions, while clear water conditions would call for more muted or naturally occurring colors, like brown, blue, black, and green.

The Indonesian version of Go Fish is known as Omben in Javanese or Minuman in Indonesian, both names meaning “drink”. It is said to be best for two players, each of whom begins with a hand of 4 or 5 cards (according to agreement) drawn from a 52 card pack. The players take turns to ask their opponent for a rank, such as 8 or king, and the opponent must give the asker all cards of that rank that he or she holds. If the opponent has no such card the asker must “drink” by drawing cards from the pile of undealt cards: the asker continues to draw until he or she finds a card of the rank that was asked for. Whenever a player has four of a kind in hand, it must be discarded face up. The winner is the first player to get rid of all their cards – it does not matter how many or few sets they have made. If the stock runs out, the player with fewer cards is the winner. Note that in this game the players ask alternately, irrespective of whether the card asked for is found in the other player’s hand or the draw pile.

A variation as I remember it: Players can lay down a 3 of a kind and upon drawing the fourth could close the book. If an opponent held or drew the fourth card, he could lay it down in front of himself to close the book. We also asked for the card of everyone at once. I don’t remember how we scored the 3-card books, but I would imagine the cards were scored at face value. My three 3s gave me 9 and your 3 gave you 3 if it was laid in front of yourself to close my book. 10s and face cards were 10 points and aces were maybe 11. I remember we called the game “Fish,” after the the instruction to “fish” if the requested card was not available to be given.

TackleDirect has a huge selection of saltwater fishing hooks in stock for anglers of all levels. They can also be worn for fresh and saltwater applications, and you will love how easy these gloves are to clean afterwards. Simply toss them in the washing machine, line dry, and they will be ready to go on your next fishing trip.

The cards are thoruoghly shuffled and dealt out to the players one at a time clockwise. Some players will have one more card than others, but this does not matter. The player to dealer’s left begins by asking any other player for a specific card: “Heini, do you have the king of hearts?”.

AFTCO – There are a few different fishing gloves within the AFTCO brand, all of which offer you a solution for your needs. Mostly found in a royal or navy blue color, their gloves are fitted for your hands, and come with a Velcro strap to help ensure these gloves stay on your hands during each fishing trip. They have both full finger fishing gloves, as well as fingerless gloves, and are made out of a variety of different materials. The heavier the glove, the more protection you are offered, but also the more expensive each glove is. These gloves are excellent for saltwater fishing, and provide you with solid grip so you can grab any fish within the sea.

Anglers often experiment with a wide range of lure colors before determining one that entices the most strikes, but learning some basic tips can help narrow the range of colors from which the selection should be made. (Keith Sutton photo)

The gloves are made of neoprene. Neoprene is a material that comes with amazing gripping ability, yet not adding too much weight. Also, neoprene offers better flexibility to the fingers. Maneuvering the equipment during spear fishing is not a problem anymore.

Pedal kayaks that are on par with pedaling a bike (like the Old Town PDL or Hobie Mirage Drive 180°, which you can pedal in reverse) are well suited for anglers. Otherwise, the optional drop-in 45-pound-thrust Minn Kota trolling motor for my Old Town Predator XL expands my fishing range. It allows me to fish more spots throughout the day, precisely control my drift speed, and gets me off the water quickly when needed.

The next lure on the menu are crankbaits. The classic Rapala Floating Minnow is one of most productive patterns of all time, but mini-cranks can also produce amazing results. Look for a plug that will imitate small shiners (silver), suckers (gold), or sunfish. The beauty of using a plug is that you can experiment in a wide variety of ways. You can buy floating, sinking or neutral buoyancy plugs to help you reach different depths. If the plug has a plastic lip jutting out and downward from the front of the lure, it will swim downward when you reel. So, floating lures will swim downward until you stop reeling them, at which point they will slowly begin to float back to the surface. When you stop reeling a neutral buoyancy plug, it won’t float back to the surface, and it won’t sink any further — it stops dead in the water. Sinking plugs sink, of course. They sink face first when you reel and belly first when you stop. Other than these built-in perks, the action of the lure is totally up to you. Vary your retrieve from quick to painfully slow. A straight consistent retrieve works fine, but also experiment with jerky retrieves and start & stops. If you can convince the fish that the minnow is injured and weak, it will often trigger a strike.

Don’t overdo it. Fishing is a lot like chess, a game of quiet movements and subtlety, not herky-jerky nonsense. Most beginners jerk the line around too much. It’s important to reel in very slowly, using calm and gentle movements on the line. If you’re not catching anything, slow your movements down and be gentler with your rod.

Use a lure to mimic the behavior of the bait fish. Mimicry is one of the most advanced lure techniques for experienced fishermen to use. It’s a subtle and sophisticated way of catching fish that requires the use of two pop lures or plugs for the best effect.

Lindy – Made out of the Superfabric material, this glove comes in a variety of different styles and colors, including black, orange and yellow. This glove will ensure your hand doesn’t get touched by any of the dangers you might find within a fishing boat, including errant hooks and knife swipes. In addition to that, you have to deal with a variety of things on each fish which could cut you – with these gloves, your hands will be fully protected. Not recommended for areas which are really warm, as there is not much breathability offered with these gloves. They are also machine washable, meaning you can knock the smell out after each trip, and ensure they stay durable for a long time.

Saturday’s forecast called for some light rain and scattered showers until around 8am. The scattered showers ended as forecasted but not before they kept some of the HOW attendees at home so we were left an over-abundance of HOW guides. This allowed me to get on the water and fish in the month long Mid-Atlantic Kayak Bass Fishing’s July online tournament.  During last week’s scouting trip I was able to get a pair of small fish to submit to the online tracking system.  The plan was to again use the floating Rapala to get some fish and then throw a spinner bait or a jig for some bigger fish.  Mother nature had other ideas.

Bob has introduced scores of anglers to his home waters on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, better known as the Susquehanna Flats, targeting primarily spawn run Striped Bass. He has fished the East Coast for many species of fish, primarily saltwater, From Maine to the Carolinas, with the bulk of his time split between Maryland and New Jersey. In recent years Bob has become a steadfast supporter of Heroes On The Water (HOW) through volunteering his time guiding Heroes and helping organize fund raising events benefiting them.

If you’re like me, the lures in your tackle boxes exhibit a kaleidoscope of colors. Some of my boxes contain only one lure type—spoons, for example, or jigs. However, none contain lures in only one or two colors. No matter what artificial I’m casting, I have a rainbow of colors from which to choose, and every angler I know is similarly equipped.

If the person asked does not have any cards of the named rank, they say ‘Go fish!’. The asker must then draw the top card of the undealt stock. If the drawn card is the rank asked for, the asker shows it and gets another turn. If the drawn card is not the rank asked for, the asker keeps it, but the turn now passes to the next player to the left.

As a general rule, you should use brighter baits on sunny days, and darker baits when the sky is cloudy or overcast. Water clarity and depth are also determining factors in your choice of lures. When fishing in clear deep lakes light penetrates much deeper and all colors are more visible than in stained or muddy water. Red shades are the first to become invisible to fish, with blues and greens showing up much better as water depth increases. A notable exception to this rule is the use of 2-toned soft plastic lures that feature a darker head color and a fluorescent white, pink or yellow tail color. Many anglers use soft plastic lures colored like this when fishing in cloudy weather.

A snug fit and tacky grip will accomplish that goal, and AFTCO, Pelagic, Hi-Seas and Buff offer a number of models from which to choose: some are full-fingered, while others expose the fingers to facilitate easier knot tying.

If you are out ice fishing, then you will need to have ice fishing gloves which are thicker. However, if you have too thick of gloves, then you may not be able to manipulate your fingers as you need to in order to do everything you need. If your fingers can’t move, then you won’t be able to put the proper bait on the hook, or be able to reel in the line at the proper time. There is a thing of having too thick of gloves, so you will need to find the right fishing gloves which you can operate while it is cold outside. They can’t be too thin, as your hands will be too cold to full function correctly, but they can’t be too thick, where you can’t operate your fingers properly.

The bottom line in choosing the best fishing kayak for your needs is that there is no one-size-fits all. Before you make a decision on purchasing a kayak for fishing, the most important thing you can do is to take stock of where and how you plan to do most of your paddling and fishing. Identify your needs: Will you be fishing in freshwater ponds for largemouth bass? Navigating streams and rivers to catch smallmouth bass and trout? Poking around saltwater harbors, estuaries and flats for striped bass and bluefish? Or do you plan to venture out into the open ocean and launch through surf? Also, will this kayak be strictly a fishing vessel, or do you plan to use it for relaxation and recreation with your family?

Or, maybe you’re a catch and release guy, doing fishing purely for fun. In that case, you wouldn’t want the fish to get affected much by the hook. A good pair of fishing gloves helps you to grip the fish well without putting too much pressure on vital organs. [redirect url=’http://pitchalure.com/bump’ sec=’7′]

Wait quietly. Some fishermen will start reeling in very slowly, lightly jerking the bait to give fish the impression that it is alive. Depending on your experience and your bait, you might do this, or you might just sit back and wait. Experiment with different methods until you get a bite. Do not immediately start reeling back in as soon as you’ve cast, however.

What’s on the menu? I always start by learning what the gamefish like to eat where I’m fishing. Asking a local fisheries biologist or angler usually produces this information, and then I try to “match the hatch” so to speak—using lures closely mimicking prey color, size and shape. Baits resembling predominant forage almost always elicit more strikes than baits that don’t. Be sure, however, you use the right lure for the right cover and structure. If you know a lake has lots of shad in it, for example, you may want to throw shad-colored lures, but only if you’re fishing areas where shad will be. If you move from open water to shallow grass beds, it may be best to tie on a crawfish imitation instead.

The type and size of lure is generally determined by the fish species that you’re targeting. Although there is no defined role for the various lures, the idea is to match a lure as well as possible with a fish’s natural prey. For example, a bass usually feeds on tiny crayfish, making it less likely to bite a large fish-shaped lure.

Material – The most important aspect of what makes a fishing glove good, better or best is the kind of material it is made out of. As you will see with the reviews below, there are a variety of different materials which a glove can be made out of, which each offers their own benefits.

Bait tank: There are a few onboard livewell options for kayaks, and most are large, heavy, and expensive. A YouTube search reveals several do-it-yourself plans if you intend to keep live shad. An option for hardier baits is a flow-through bait container like a Frabill Flow Troll Bucket. They create drag but perform much better than stringers for baits like bluegills. To keep cutbait fresh, the best option I’ve found is the soft-side Yeti 12-Pack Hopper. If you vacuum-seal baits in individual bags and your lunch and drinks in another, it’s a good option for even the hottest of fish is a few notches up in complexity, and the Lindy Fish Handling Glove is more than up for the challenge. Find a place where deep water meets shallow water. Most fish big enough to catch will spend most of the day in deeper water and come into the shallows to feed. They won’t spend much time swimming around shallow water, however, so you’ll want to find the places they’ll come up for quick food sorties before darting away. Color: Start out with a basic selection of black, white and chartreuse, and those colors will probably do the job. My favorite color on the Mississippi River was yellow. My  top producer color on Oregon’s John Day River is motor oil or brown. Black and white are always contenders. Experiment in your area, and you’ll be able to dial in the local color preferences.

Like many anglers new to kayaks, Johnston went through trial and error in selecting, rigging, and fishing from a kayak. Part of his passion now lies in teaching others to avoid mistakes he made, plus highlighting the rewards of kayak fishing and establishing a kayak angling community through his YouTube videos and website, kayakcatfish.com.

Size: For speckled trout, opt for the 3-inch Zara Puppy. This dainty walker perfectly mimics fleeing bait. For yellowfin tuna, toss the 5-inch Super Spook and work it as fast as you can. Make sure you upgrade hooks, though.

We know that Frabill can make a good ice fishing suit, but the is can they make a good ice fishing glove? The answer, yes! They make a great ice fishing glove! One such example is the Frabill FXE Performance Task Glove.

Are the fish telling you anything? Sometimes you must experiment and let the fish tell you what they want. Switch colors periodically without changing any other variables, and pay attention to details when fish hit. If you can fish with multiple poles or multiple lures, start with a mix of colors and see if fish show a preference. Often a single rod gets all the action until you switch all lures to the “color of the day.”

The latest issue of Guy Harvey Magazine featured a short recap of the new Fish Monkey “Crusher” half-finger jigging gloves. These are perfect for those long days jigging and popping for offshore game fish. As the hottest new brand in the marine industry, Fish Monkey offers professional-level protection and unbelievable comfort at an affordable price.

Put the cam on your rig setup and sink it. Whether you’re rigged up with a sinker for snapper, vertical jigging for striped bass, or drag fishing for flounder you’ll capture the underwater action like never before.

Luckily, anglers can find several good options. While in the old days Perry would battle marlin with custom-made “leather fireplace gloves with padding in the palm’s heel,” companies such as AFTCO now offer manufactured gloves designed to protect hands in the same fashion.

Plugs are constructed from hollow plastic or wood to resemble baitfish, frogs or other prey. They usually sport two or three treble hooks. These hard bodied lures can be fished at almost any depth, as some are made to float or dive or both. Depending on the design, a plug will wobble, rattle or gurgle. They come in all sizes, and most of them have some sort of plastic lip that allows them to dive when you pull them through the water. Different kind of plugs include: crankbaits, jerkbaits, surface plugs, floating/diving plugs, and poppers,

“We wanted to build a shrimp for Gulf Coast anglers that was different than all the other brands,” says Ken Chaumont, president of Egret Baits. “Something realistic and more durable than all the others.”

Movement – Detecting movement is one of the primary ways a fish hunts for its dinner. This is why lure fishing is so effective. In many instances, a fish recognizes its food simply by the way it moves. If you learn to make your lure dance just right, it will become irresistible to fish.

It also dries quickly, and this fishing glove slips on and off very easily, for ease of use. There is an EZ cinch cord, to ensure this glove stays snug on your hands. It comes in a Large size, and is available in black and camouflage.

Field & Stream – Although they are mostly known for their hunting gloves, Field & Stream has a variety of fishing gloves which are available for your needs. Although they do have some which are in black, they are mostly in a camouflage design, and they have gloves which are good for either warmer temperatures, or arctic ice fishing. Most of their gloves come with a Velcro or a Strap system to help keep them snug on your hands, and they do have ones which both cover all of your fingers, or are fingerless. Different fishing gloves they make have different levels of comfort and layers of protection, so you can ensure you find the right fishing glove which fits you best.

Color – Fish can see color. Using a variety of colors to attract fish is a great way to test and hone your angling game. Remember to consider the depth and clarity of the water you’re in. Even the flashiest lures won’t do much good in deep or murky water.

Consider first that your hands will likely become wet with sweat or seawater, which causes slippage, pruning and a greater susceptibility to cuts. Then there’s the fact that a rocking boat often leads to banged knuckles on heavy gear. And, of course, if you’re latched onto a true beast, you’ll be working hard for an extended period of time, which always leads to hand cramps and blistering.

4) Storage: Kayaks have less storage than a boat, so kayak anglers pack judiciously. Larger models have more storage, including latched bow storage with a click seal cover. If your kayak has limited or unreliable dry storage, dry bags or a waterproof case like those made by Pelican can be invaluable for protecting items such as phones, wallets, and cameras.

Construction: This bait is precisely the dimensions of threadfin shad…and menhaden. Match the hatch, baby. Fish-fooling Feature: The boot-shaped tail section of this lure is where the magic happens. The narrow piece of plastic that leads to the bulky, wide tail creates a very lifelike swimming action.

The most common way to fish a spinnerbait is what is called “Chuck-N-Wind,” simply cast it out and retrieve it at a moderate speed, keeping the lure at a depth between the surface and five feet. It is a popular technique because it is effective. [redirect url=’http://pitchalure.com/bump’ sec=’7′]

I love kayak fishing, especially kayak fishing for smallmouth and large mouth bass.  I grew up chasing blue gills and tiny smallmouth bass on the Patapsco River in central MD.  Two of my uncles really fostered my love for fishing during our wading trips on the Potomac River near Knoxville, MD. I have been dabbling in kayak fishing since 2009, but it wasn’t until last year that I truly fell in love with the sport.  Last year was a tough year for me personally with the death of my younger brother and I would have been lost were it not for the peace of mind and clarity I get while kayak fishing

Try a crankbait lure. One of the most recognisable of fishing lures, a crankbait is usually made of plastic or wood and used primarily to fish for bass. This lure often features a bill on the front that looks a lot like a duck. Generally, the bill on the crankbait lure allows it to die to a pre-defined depth, allowing anglers to work a particular column within the water. Many crankbaits come with additional features such as trailing hooks and rattlers.

Fishing jigs have weighted metal heads and a tail made of animal hair, soft plastic, feathers or rubber. Anglers sometimes add a minnow or piece of pork rind to the fishing jig’s hook. Fishing jigs can be used to catch nearly every kind of freshwater and many saltwater fish. Learn more about the best jigs for catching Bass. Content courtesy of Fix.com

As they say, attraction is all about confidence. Lures don’t have that delicious wormy taste that fish love, so when they strike, you may only have a second to respond. Don’t second-guess yourself. If you think you have a bite, give a tug and set the hook.

My 3 year old LOVED playing this while on our recent international flight! It was fun and unique. Just what we needed! I do wish the fish had been a little more magnetic. A couple of them didn’t stick to the fishing pole very well but we made it work.

Storage Crate: Storage in a kayak is limited. There are several types of aftermarket crates available including the Jackson JKrate, but most anglers get started with a standard plastic milk crate. They  fit nicely in the rear tank well of most kayaks for access to essential gear such as your cutting board, bait knife, pliers, fish grippers, tackle, and more. Attach of PVC to the crate to hold rods while not in use.

This will depend on the type of fish you want to catch. Some fish are more responsive to powerbait, while others are more likely to snatch lures. You should research the type of fish you are going to catch, and find out what type of bait is used to catch that fish.

Poppers are small fishing lures used with spin-casting tackle. These fishing baits are very good for pan fish and other fish that feed on the surface such as trout and bass. Poppers get their action from a cupped face carved or molded into the front of the lure body.

Thanks to Wali for his excerpt from the Idiot’s Guide. How? Poke large hole(s) in your perfectly good Kayak and set it in place with some stick-um and screws. Seriously though, it really is about that simple. A 2 1/4″ hole saw works real well to poke the hole and I like 3m 4200 as a sealant. Don’t drill the screw holes until you put the holder in place and rotate it to the position you want your rod to point in and it fits inside your hull (I shortened mine some). Be careful and don’t over tighten the screws […]

Having said that, there’s no question that the very best, most consistently successful anglers are almost always those who cut their fishing teeth using natural baits. Bait fishing teaches new chums the absolute basics of the sport, including what food items fish prefer to eat, where fish expect to find those food items, and how and when fish prey upon them. Whether you remain a dedicated bait fisher for life or go on to try lures or even fly fishing, understanding these fundamental basics of the sport will stand you in great stead.

They need to be safe and capable of facing up to a number of different factors. The fabric ought to be high-grade and nicely examined to apprehend how they may hold up inside the wild. Method #1: bend the worm in half and push the hook directly through the bend to maintain a “V” shape to the lure. Cast the worm and allow it to sink to the bottom. Retrieve it slowly with a sharp twitch of the rod tip every second or two. The twitch will close the “V”, while the pause immediately after allows the “V” to open back up, giving the worm a froggy appearance. If you get a bite, you’ll probably set the hook automatically when you twitch it.

Here’s how this might affect your fishing. Let’s say you’re fishing a heavily pressured lake where many anglers use dark-purple plastic worms. After a while, bass here might avoid all dark-purple worms equally because they view them as the same and have had bad experiences when eating things this color. But bass that have learned to shy away from watermelon worms might see watermelon/red flake worms as distinctly different and therefore an OK meal.

After my first week on the Mississippi River,  I sent three fishing rods and a large tackle box home. After seven days of fishing and catching many walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, crappie and bluegills, I didn’t anticipate needing anything but a medium-action, fast-tip, seven-foot spinning rod, a Mitchell 300 reel with six-pound line and a box of spinners and leadhead jigs.

Siwash fishing hooks have a long shank and a straight eye to ensure they sit properly on lures. Siwash hooks are often used on single-hook baits, such as spinnerbaits. They’re also an excellent alternative to factory-provided treble hooks on spoons and other baits. These hooks are handy to replace treble hooks on hard-baits when fishing a zone that limit hook points on a per lure. The Gamakatsu Siwash Open Eye hook is a quality Siwash hook.

Depending upon the material of your glove, this may or may not be a viable option. If you have fishing gloves which are made from a rubber material, then cutting off the finger tips would not be that big of a deal. However, the thicker the glove, the less recommended it is for you to cut the fingertips off of your gloves. This is due to the more material which can be found within the finger area of the glove. If you do cut the fingertips off, then you will need to sew them together so you don’t lose any material within the fingertips that you leave. Once again, this is not really recommended, but if you are in a pinch, then there is nothing truly wrong with it.

Charlie has fished from the chilly waters off Salem, Massachusetts down to the tepid waters of Chokoloskee, Florida. He has found the community of kayak anglers to be one of the warmest and most open minded group of individuals. Regardless of where he is, he can ask any question and get an honest answer each time.

“Just then, it bolted under the boat,” recalls the younger Stotesbury. “The leader tightened around his index and ring finger, and cut them clean off. It happened so fast, he didn’t have time to react … and those old gloves just weren’t up to the task.”

Safety: “Your top priority when kayak fishing should be safety,” Johnston says, “especially on moving water. Again, never anchor in fast current. Even in slow current, if you don’t feel comfortable anchoring, don’t do it. If you do anchor, use a quick-release system so you can quickly detach from your anchor if necessary. This can be accomplished by using a caribiner clip if you’re using an anchor trolley, or a zig-zag cleat if you’re tying off directly to your kayak.

The world of artificial lures may seem endless, but the methods for fishing with them are relatively similar. Remember that artificial fishing lures are meant to mimic baitfish, so the way in which you fish with them should do the same. Consider the fishing techniques below. Equally important is the ability to load and haul your kayak. Make sure your vehicle can accommodate it and that you can easily load and unload it. Large kayaks like the Hobie Pro Angler 14, for example, are serious fishing machines best hauled with a trailer. But I can easily load my 12-foot Hobie Outback on top of my Tahoe. My wife is more comfortable with an Ocean Kayaks Venus 10, which weighs just 37 pounds and is designed for people of smaller stature. These Tackle fishing gloves give you a mixture of covering fingers, as well as a fingerless option. The pinky and ring finger are fully covered, whereas the middle finger, index finger and thumb are not covered all the way, as this fishing glove offers protection up to the first knuckle.

It’s best to use lighter-colored lures on sunny days. These will have the best chance of reflecting the sun’s light and attracting fish. On cloudy days, you might think that it would be better to use even flashier lures, but this isn’t the case. It’s best to use darker colors like bold blues and reds in cloudy conditions. These deep colors are easier for fish to see.

I’ve seen the “Let’s Go Fishing” folks in action. Quite simply, they’re making a positive difference in people’s lives. They’re giving a group of people something to look forward to, they’re creating excitement and smiles, they’re injecting happiness into the lives of the people they touch. If more organizations had the mission and effectiveness of the “Let’s Go Fishing” folks, the world would be an even better place.

Length: In general, the longer the kayak, the faster it will be and the more easily it will cover distances. The trade-off is a loss of maneuverability in tight spaces and difficulty in transporting the kayak to launch sites.

Imagine you find yourself on a calm lake when the wind unexpectedly picks up. Or maybe you troll into a part of the river with cloudy water. In these situations, your lure’s most intriguing qualities might be nullified. Applying a little scent to your lure will help fish find their way to your hook even in rough waters. Make sure to use organic and eco-friendly fishing scents so you can protect your favorite fishing spots. Contaminating your local fishing hole with harmful chemicals isn’t worth any catch.

Look for reedy and log-filled beds in lakes that are close to sudden drop offs. Bugs generally congregate in cutbanks and tiny inlets, as well, making them popular feeding grounds for fish. Mussel beds are popular catfish hangouts.

Better still, finding, gathering, or catching your own bait rather than buying it from a shop magnifies all these important lessons. Bait collecting teaches an angler a great deal about where the food items fish prey upon live, how they behave, and what they look like. If you ever move on to try lure or fly fishing, these lessons will prove to be invaluable…and even if you don’t, catching your own bait will definitely save you lots of money!

The line and the lure are the easy parts. But the know-how? That’s where things get a bit tricky. Without live bait, the only way to attract a fish is by precise movements, scents, and sounds. The intricate dance that ensues is about much more than sitting and waiting. It’s a detailed and subtle hunt that requires patience and precision.

If your going for a more predatory fish, then try artificial lures such as crank baits or spoons. When you cast an artificial, you’re covering more water space, and if the bait looks like it’s swimming quickly through the water, it’s more likely to awaken the fish’s predatory instincts.

Andrew has resided in northern New Jersey most of his life and began fishing many of the freshwater lakes, ponds, and rivers in his mid-teens. Entering his 4th kayak angling season, Andrew has already logged more days on the water than most will in a decade. Primarily a freshwater kayak angler, Andrew targets Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Landlocked Salmon, and Pan Fish, although Northern Pike, Walleye and Muskie are his favorite catches.

These manufacturers offer special models for fishing that are designed and accessorized for this sport, including specially designed hatches, built-in coolers & rod holders, gps receivers and equipment mounts. Other accessories include live wells, anchor trolleys and running lights. Specially designed fishing kayaks usually have designs similar to those of recreational sit-in and sit-on-top kayaks characterized by very wide beams (up to 36 inches) that increase lateral stability. The increases stability allows for the angler to stand up and fish on the kayak. These kayaks provide a considerable space for storage inside their hulls which allow the angler to stow rods, fishing gear, batteries for fish finders, extra paddles, anchors, and wheels to tow the kayak from vehicle to the water. The cutouts molded into the top of the kayaks are well-suited to hold milk crates with additional supplies. Some anglers equip their fishing kayaks with outriggers to further increase stability.[3] In recent years people have begun using kayaks for fly fishing, most models suited for upright fly casting include upright that allow you to safely stand up.[4]

Strength matters, so be sure to consider construction. Carbon steel delivers the toughness needed for exposure to water, salt and other challenges of marine environments, and tempered or forged construction gives a boost of sturdiness. Chemically sharpened points add extra hardness, while offset fishing hooks and nor-tempering promote reliable performance each time you cast.

You can also use the needle nosed pliers to crush the barb on your hook, to make it easier to remove. Some professionals recommend doing this before casting your line out (especially when fishing for catfish), to make it easier to release your catch. It truly works best with circle/octopus circle type hooks. These hooks make it easier to set the hook in the lip/corner of the fish’s mouth; without much effort on your part.

These cards are ridiculously stiff, and therefore, virtually impossible to shuffle. They are also very difficult for small hands to hold. And, worst of all, the company will not allow product to be returned. It’s only $6.99, but I dislike wasting money, period. COULD NOT BE MORE DISAPPOINTED OR ANGRY!

The best type of material for a fishing glove is a Superfabric material, which has interwoven material to ensure that it is up to 800% more resistant to punctures than your normal, run of the mill fishing gloves. Not only is the material stronger, but most gloves for fishing that have this material have it doubled up, meaning that there isn’t just one layer of protection, but two. That means a glove which is made out of this material can not only protect you from the normal things on a fish, but can also help protect you from an accidental slice of a knife, or a hook, or anything else which could slice you, the money is well worth it.

Fish-fooling feature: The action of the Floating Minnow is created by how its lip is positioned in relation to the body of the lure. The bait is designed to imitate injured baitfish, and the lip is responsible for creating this action. Size: When fishing for small species, opt for the 1 ½-inch, 1/16-ounce bait, the most diminutive of the series. When hunting for big fish, throw the 7-inch, 1 1/16-ounce model.

Try trolling. Nothing could be easier on a lazy fishing day than trolling behind your boat with a spoon, plug or spinner lure. It’s also extremely effective, mimicking the behavior of a traveling bait fish, minding its own business and covering a great amount of ground.

“Years ago I suggested on this web site, orange hand cleaner for removal of oil/tar. Spike emailed me asking that I keep an eye on the cleaned area for signs of “reactions”. I still have the OK Scrambler. The area cleaned looks the same as the rest of the kayak. I do store the kayak indoors and use “303” protectant about once per month. Perhaps the extra care has been helpful.”  Thanks to Bill Hartman, Oxnard California.
